God—What Big Eyes You Have!

courtesy Bixabay.comThis is for you. The teen girl who feels invisible. The mom surrounded by loneliness. The woman who wonders if anyone cares. The man struggling with meaning in life. Those touched by hopelessness. Souls caught in the pit of despair. The lost who don’t believe they can be found.

To everyone who’s ever questioned, Is God there? Does He know? Does He see?

Little Red Riding Hood’s wolf in disguise might have been portrayed with big eyes—“The better to see you with.” But it doesn’t compare to the Lord Jehovah’s eyes. Vast. Keen. Aware.

A notable story of a God who sees is found in Genesis 16. Hagar, the servant to Sarai and Abram (later to be Abraham and Sarah), had fled the scene of a drama-like ordeal. Sarai had taken some important family matters into her own hands. Still childless, Sarai conjured up a plan for Hagar to conceive a child by Abram.

Hagar obliged her mistress and the story unfolds. After it was all said and done, Sarai regretted her own scheme. Sounds vaguely familiar. Been there, done that. Important life decisions should be in the hands of a higher power. When will we ever learn?  Scripture says Sarai “dealt harshly” with Hagar who ran away. I imagine Hagar felt invisible and alone. In the wilderness, she encountered the angel of the Lord who proclaimed she would bear a son, her offspring would be multiplied, and to return and submit to her mistress.

It’s within this narrative that Hagar recognized a powerful truth about God: “So she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, ‘You are a God of seeing,’ for she said, ‘Truly here I have seen him who looks after me'” (verse 13).

“For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth so that He may support those whose heart is completely His….” (2 Chronicles 16:9 AMP).

The Google definition of to and fro references a constant movement, backward and forward, side to side. This means there’s no place on earth to escape God’s sight. It’s moving and running in every direction. A God of seeing who found Hagar in the wilderness and finds us in our wilderness.

We can find comfort in the fact that God sees. The Lord is everywhere—all the time. The Bible confirms His vision is omnipresent. He sees us. He sees all things. His eyes are in a continual state of motion. The God who sees me.

A God Who Supports

Not only do God’s eyes continually roam the earth, they are on a mission. The ESV states, “that he may give strong support.”

A bearing. An undergirding in all of life’s plans, schemes, and ordeals. Support straight from the eyes and heart of the Almighty. Especially in those instances where we have fled the scene. The ordeal too much to handle. Alone in the wilderness, Hagar saw the God who looked after her. He’s the God who cares for us when we think no one cares. The Lord always knows where we’ve come from and where we’re going. (See Genesis 16:8.)

A Heart Completely His

God’s eyes search with a specific intent. To support those whose heart is completely His. Belonging wholly to the Holy One. Giving unadulterated worship to the Mighty King.

A complete heart=downright, unmitigated, untempered and utter devotion to God over people and things. Allowing Him to devise the plan. Submitting to His will and His way. Expecting Him to be visible in our lonely places. Giving Him authority to reign supreme. Letting Him find us and wanting to be found by Him. Chasing after hope in Christ alone.

You’re not alone.

You’re cared for.

You have life meaning.

You have hope.

You can be found.

God’s there. God knows. God sees.
