4 Obedient Ways to Wait on God

I know. It’s so tough to wait on God.
But what if God orchestrates His works at the perfect time in our lives for His glory and sovereignty?
Even if things look and feel hopeless, His glory shows up in the choicest hour.
From Genesis to Revelation, stories of miracles and His mighty works grace the pages of God’s Word. The dead come back to life. Nature obeys the Creator’s voice—the rain comes or stops, the winds and waves cease or the sun doesn’t set.
Still further, a virgin gives birth to the messiah. A boy’s lunch of a few fish and bread multiplies to feed thousands.
The lame walk, the blind see, and the oppressed find freedom.
And there are many ways we see God in our daily lives. Like breath in our lungs, provision, mercy, heavenly wisdom, forgiveness, and so much more.
But His people also had to wait on God in biblical days and it’s no different in present day.

Not only does the Lord perform wonders for His people at the opportune time. But moments and miracles of faith require us to follow God’s instructions.
In Exodus 14, Moses leads the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. A place of physical and emotional bondage. As God’s people travel through the wilderness, the Egyptian ruler, Pharaoh, and his army pursue them.
The scene looked and felt hopeless. Have you been in this place before?
“And they said to Moses,…are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you treated us this way and brought us out of Egypt?…it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness” Exodus 14:11-12. (Emphasis mine.)
The Israelites find themselves up against a huge barrier, the Red Sea. As they wait on the shore, the enemy closes in with no where for them to go.
But, I’m familiar with the it-would-have-been-better attitude. Are you?

And it usually comes:
- on the heels of the enemies pursuit.
- when the hardships of life close in around me.
- as I face unbelievable barriers.
- in what seems like an unforeseeable way out.
- when I’m fearful of my circumstances or what-ifs.
“Moses said to the people, ‘Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today’” (verse 13). Then the Lord tells Moses to have the people go forward (verse 15).
4 Obedient Ways to Wait on God
(1.) Fear not. Do not be afraid of the enemy or in the midst of difficult circumstances. Both pale in comparison to God’s power and glory.
(2.) Stand firm. Do not shift in your perspective. Shaky perspectives move us out of a position for God’s glory. Like when we say or think, “God, it would have been better….” Keep a God-perspective. Let God work behind the scenes on your behalf and in His way.
(3.) See Salvation. Deliverance comes from God. He rescues from sin. He saves the weary soul. And He holds time in His hand. Timing is everything. So the Lord’s glory is perfectly orchestrated at the right time.
(4.) Go forward. The Lord tells Moses to have the people go forward before the Red Sea is divided. So they could cross on dry land. Even before they could see a way of escape, they needed to move. The Lord pre-arranges the details and the final results that will bring about His ultimate glory.
God’s Perfect Timing in the Wait
God keeps His Word. When He says, I am the Lord. Or, I will….It happens.
Whatever the Lord says, it will come to pass in HIs perfect timing.
I will get the glory over Pharaoh and all his host and they shall know that I am the Lord (verse 4). I am the Lord who drove back the Red Sea by a strong east wind for Israel to cross on dry land (verse 21).
And He’s the Lord who saved Israel while they watched His great power and glory (verses 30-31).
God’s power often shows up in our lives during the choicest time, at the most difficult stage, or when the audience is expected to be the greatest—the largest number of people will see His glory.
God’s works and miracles happen all around us. We may see them. But sometimes they remain unseen, known only in the heavenly places.

Yet, God always shows up. Whatever happens, people will know He is the Lord.
The question is this: Will we wait on God obediently?
Let’s pray to fear not, stand firm, see God’s salvation, and go foward with God.

Thanks so much, Mark. God bless you! God orchestrates His works at the perfect time in our lives for His glory and sovereignty.
When we wait obediently on the Lord and trust in His perfect timing, He will show up in ways we could never have foreseen. Just as He parted the Red Sea before the eyes of the Israelites, He will work miracles through any obstacle we may encounter. Wonderful reflection here today, Karen. Blessings!
Martha, I love how you said this, “When we wait obediently on the Lord and trust in His perfect timing, He will show up in ways we could never have foreseen.” That’s good. Let’s pray to fear not, stand firm, see God’s salvation, and go foward with God.
Amen. Love this message. I am learning that God is always working His plan, even while I wait. His timing is best. Thank you for the reminder to pray, move forward, and trust Him. Have a blessed day! 🙂
Thanks, Melissa. May we never get weary in the waiting, but trust what God is doing and that He has our best in mind as we obediently follow Him and His commands.
By the grace of God (through Christ) Truth. So Essentially, Poignantly, and Adeptly Real…Yes and Amen.
Not only does the Lord perform wonders for His people at the opportune time. But moments and miracles of faith require us to follow God’s instructions.
As I read your post, I thought of the old hymn “Trust and Obey”. While we wait it takes faith in our sovereign, omnipotent God to obey Him and take steps forward when He tells us to. He has proven Himself faithful over and over. Thank you Karen for this encouraging reminder.
Several others have mentioned that hymn as well, Susan. It does take faith in the wait and to be obedient to God knowing He’s faithful to His Word and He is God. Not only does the Lord perform wonders for His people at the opportune time. But moments and miracles of faith require us to follow God’s instructions.
Trust and obey is my favourite hymn. Trust in Almighty God and obey him. Thanks Karen. May God bless you and keep you safe.
That’s a beautiful hymn with powerful lyrics. I pray to trust and obey. God bless!
It’s so much easier for me to look back and see all the ways my waiting has paid off. I still struggle in the waiting so thanks for these great ideas Karen.
Yvonne, waiting has paid off so many times in the past. I guess we soon forget and struggle again, much like the Israelites. Let’s pray to fear not, stand firm, see God’s salvation, and go foward with God.
Amen, amen! As you say: It’s so hard to wait on God! “But what if God orchestrates His works at the perfect time in our lives for His glory and sovereignty?” (I’ve experienced this firsthand!)
Thanks for sharing your firsthand experience, Jessia. I have too. May we Let God work behind the scenes on our behalf and in His way.
Karen, what a beautiful reminder from Scripture. It is so hard to wait on the Lord. May God protect me from the “it-would-have-been-better” attitude. There are some unanswered prayers that I cry out to the Lord for daily. I pray for continued fervency in prayer, but at the same time, a resting in God’s goodness and timing.
Like how you said, ” I pray for continued fervency in prayer, but at the same time, a resting in God’s goodness and timing.” God is teaching me that His timing really is perfect and it’s for my good and His glory. Blessings!
