Do We Realize the Sheer Magnitude of Prayer?

Do We Realize the Sheer Magnitude of Prayer?

Do we really understand the sheer magnitude of prayer?

Many times we underestimate the power of prayer. And what praying accomplishes in our lives, hearts, and in the heavenly realm.

Because believing in prayer is not the same as fully understanding what it can do. And believing is not the same as actually spending time in prayer.

Whether it’s unprecedented days in the world or my world, I desire to spend more time with God in prayer—to anchor myself to Him.

Even though our recent journey of my husband’s heart attack gave us a glimpse of how prayer can change things, I need the magnitude of prayer every day.

So let’s look at 7 reminders for our hearts of the sheer magnitude of P-R-A-Y-E-R.

Sheer Magnitude of Prayer

P – Proclaims the Lord’s glory and praise.

Proclaiming the Lord’s glory and praise is not just for times of corporate worship. In fact, prayer is a form of individual worship. And it’s never all about us like a kid with a wish-list of wants and give-me’s.

Praising the Lord and glorifying His holy name is a great way to start prayer. And even pray praising Him throughout the day.

“My mouth is filled with your praise, and with your glory all the day.” Psalm 71:8 (ESV)

R – Renews a right spirit in us.

In Psalm 51, David prayed to confess his sin with Bathsheba and ask the Lord for a clean heart. He asked God to restore the joy of his salvation, and to renew a right spirit in him.

And the Lord graciously answered by doing all this and more. God restored David spiritually and to his position.

Likewise, prayer spiritually restores us in our relationship with God (and others). And even our position when a right spirit’s renewed in us.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10 (ESV)

Sheer Magnitude: Spiritual Warfare

A – Arms us for spiritual warfare.

The Bible makes it clear, we face an unseen enemy and the forces of darkness. Ephesians 6:10-17 describes the armor of God and its importance in this battle. But we often miss the final piece in verse 18. Prayer!

Do We Realize the Sheer Magnitude of Prayer?

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” Ephesians 6:18 (NIV)

Y – Yields our hearts to God’s purposes.

I sometimes find it difficult to yield my plans and will to the Lord. But I’m learning God’s ways are best, He knows best, and all the best things come from Him.

Notice the verses preceding the one we often quote, Romans 8:28.

“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:26-28 (ESV, emphasis added)

Prayer-Release Our Burdens

E – Encourages an intimate relationship with God.

We build intimate relationships by spending time with people. So the same is true with God. When we are in God’s presence praying and listening to what He has to say to us, our intimacy with Him grows. And we know and understand Him better.

We note Revelation 3:20 for salvation, and rightly so. Yet, it’s also a spiritual image of inviting the Lord into our lives over and over.

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.” Revelation 3:20 (ESV)

R – Releases our burdens and control to God.

God didn’t create us to carry burdens or to allow us control. The Creator is CEO of the world and my life because I belong to Him. I only mess things up and create more burdens for myself when I take over.

And the Lord has a strong shoulder for the burdens heaped on us from the world or our circumstances.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)

Such a powerful and important reminder here, Karen, to pray without ceasing! During this Lenten season, I really want to spend more time with the Lord in prayer, and you’ve explained beautifully here how prayer solidifies and strengthens our relationship with God.
Thanks, too, for the heartfelt comment you put on my most recent blog. I have responded!
Blessings always!

Karen says:

Martha, I love how you said, “prayer solidifies and strengthens our relationship with God.” We often forget the relational aspect of prayer–it’s not a give me list–it’s communining with the Almighty. Love and hugs, friend!

Amen. I’m thankful to go to God in prayer and know He is always listening. 🙂 Blessings to you and your family.

Karen says:

Melissa, it is a privilege to go before God’s throne and presence to praise Him, ask for forgiveness, intercede for others, and ask for His will to be done on earth. God bless.

Michelle Martini says:

Amen Karen,

He always listens to our prayers. The outcome isn’t always what we want but is always His will.

I am still thanking Him for listening to our prayers for Mike!

Bert is getting over pneumonia and Flu B. With his history this can be very bad but God pulled him through once again! Praising Him every day!

Blessings,
Michelle Martini

Karen says:

Hi Michelle, sorry to hear Bert was so sick, but that he is recovering. Praise the Lord. I also continue to give the Lord thanksgiving and praise for hearing our prayers for Mike. He’s a good, good Father and left him with us for a reason. God bless.

“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” Ephesians 6:18 (NIV)

James Millary says:

During this Lenten service I want to be closer with Our Almighty God. May God bless you and your family.

Karen says:

So do I, James. God bless. “My mouth is filled with your praise, and with your glory all the day.” Psalm 71:8 (ESV)

Daniel L. Spencer says:

By the grace of God (through Christ) Truth. So Essentially, Sufficiently, and Adeptly Real…Yes and Amen.

Karen says:

God bless, Daniel. Thankful for the power of prayer in our lives and what it accomplishes in our lives, hearts, and in the heavenly realm.

Yvonne Morgan says:

Prayer is the answer. Amen Karen. I wish we could really understand the power of prayer, then we would pray constantly.

Karen says:

We would pray constantly, Yvonne, that’s a good point. God bless.

Nancy Ruegg says:

I’m going to write this acronym on a 3×5 to keep with my prayer cards. Such good reminders for prayer-topics we might unintentionally leave out. The “Y” speaks to me the most. I don’t want to waste time on pursuits that aren’t God-ordained. I need to yield to him each day and stay close to him throughout the day–through prayer–so he can direct me and keep me on the straight path. Thank you, Karen!

Karen says:

Thanks for sharing, Nancy, that’s a neat idea and I’m going to do that too. And agree with needing to pray to yield myself to God’s purpose. He does know best after all. I often pray the Lord helps me lay down my agenda and pick up His will. God bless!

Jessica J Brodie says:

THis is so true. As you say, “Many times we underestimate the power of prayer. And what praying accomplishes in our lives, hearts, and in the heavenly realm.” I got out of my regular prayer practice during COVID when my commute disappeared, and I felt it! But I got back on track. Now I try hard to spend time every morning in prayer.

Karen says:

We all got off track with things during COVID, Jessica. Thanks for sharing your experience. If we could only grasp what prayer is accomplishing behind the scenes in our lives and in the heavenlies, we wouldn’t go a day without spending time in prayer. Sometimes I even pray the Lord gives me the strength and desire to pray. God bles.
