Find Solid Footing: Stand on Jesus the Rock

Find solid footing in this life, stand on the solid Rock. Jesus.

The sun beamed with brightness. My heart looked forward to the spectacular view I’d only heard about and seen in photos.

Pretty Place in South Carolina. Not only pretty, but also a place with an outdoor chapel, seating, and a cross for spiritual reflection. Once in the parking lot, we took a walking trail that led to Pretty Place.

But I lost my solid footing on the rocky path. The initial landing so hard I let go of the leash with our pug Winston on the other end—only a puppy at the time.

This sent my husband, Mike, chasing after him while I shouted, Winston, do you want a treat? hoping this would turn him around. No success.

Finally, Mike grabbed the leash end just before a huge drop off at the overlook we were filming for our YouTube channel. We knew it could have been worse. Winston was fine. But Mike dropped the camera in the chase. And me? The soreness lasted for days.

Still, the trip unfolded as planned. An amazing view of God’s creation mesmerized us.

Likewise, I’ve lost my solid footing on the path in life. Perhaps you relate. Maybe we stumble in a relationship, as a parent or grandparent, slip up at work on a project, mess up in a life goal or dream, or other.

Further, we all know as God’s children how we lose our solid footing on our spiritual journey.

Life often becomes rocky and causes us to stumble. But to find solid footing in this life, stand on the solid Rock. Jesus.

So let’s look at 4 ways we stand on Jesus the R.O.C.K.

R – Rest in Jesus: Solid Footing

Have you ever hiked and needed a break to catch your breath and rest? Often, life’s terrain is strenuous and taxing on our body, mind, and spirit. We need rest, the rest only Jesus provides.

Find solid footing in this life, stand on the solid Rock. Jesus.

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.” Psalm 23:1-3 (ESV)

O – Occupy the narrow path to Jesus

The world encourages us to choose the path that leads to the greatest success, desires, and dreams. But the Bible makes it clear that there’s a narrow way leading to life and Jesus.

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” Matthew 7:13-14 (NIV)

C – Chase the holiness of Jesus: Solid Footing

An important aspect of solid footing includes chasing after holiness. Jesus. Is. Holy. We follow Jesus and seek His holiness.

“As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.  But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’” 1 Peter 1:14-16 (NIV)

K – Keep our eyes on Jesus

Keeping our eyes on the path, helps us not lose our footing and stumbling over debris in our way. In the same way, we keep our eyes on Jesus, who is before us on the path to life.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” Hebrews 12:1-3 (NIV)

Find solid footing in this life, stand on the solid Rock. Jesus.

Oh, Karen, what an ordeal you went through! I can so identify with losing my footing on a hiking path as it’s happened before, but not as badly as you had to bear. May we always look to Jesus, our Rock and our Salvation, to keep us balanced and safe on our spiritual journeys. Blessings!

Karen says:

Yes, Martha, so thankful Jesus is the Rock of our salvation, a sure and steady fortress. God bless!

Losing our footing in a tough terrain or in any situation in life can be troublesome. I’m thankful for the protection of God. Have a blessed day! 🙂

Karen says:

So true, Melissa. Keeping our eyes on the path, helps us not lose our footing and stumbling over debris in our way. In the same way, we keep our eyes on Jesus, who is before us on the path to life.

Susan Davis says:

I appreciate how God gives you insight and applications to share from your life’s experiences. I’ve stumbled and physically fallen on hard ground and also have gotten myself tripped up on life’s journey. So very thankful God’s grace and mercy always helped me heal and turning my eyes to Jesus led me to His will and way.

Karen says:

Thank you, Susan. I’m grateful for God’s guidance and mercy and grace on life’s journey. God bless!

Daniel L. Spencer says:

By the grace of God (through Christ) Truth. So Essentially, Poignantly, and Adeptly Real…Yes and Amen.

When we hike, that is something I worry about so we try to be extra careful as we get older. I’m thankful I don’t have to worry about the rock of my Salvation because He will guide me. Thanks Karen.

Karen says:

I relate to that, Yvonne. Keeping our eyes on the path, helps us not lose our footing and stumbling over debris in our way. In the same way, we keep our eyes on Jesus, who is before us on the path to life.

Jessica Brodie says:

As a clumsy person, I’ve lost my footing hiking and even walking so many times! Thank God that’s something I don’t ever have to worry about with God. I’m always on solid ground with him. Thank you, Karen!

Karen says:

Yes, I pray we stand on the solid Rock of Jesus Christ.

I’m sorry to hear about your fall, Karen. But what a powerful analogy. We all stumble. Sometimes because of our sinful choices or someone else’s. Sometimes due to circumstances beyond our control. But God is always with us, waiting to help us get back on solid footing with Christ. What a good, good Father!

Karen says:

Yes, agree! Keeping our eyes on the path, helps us not lose our footing and stumbling over debris in our way. In the same way, we keep our eyes on Jesus, who is before us on the path to life.

Hi Karen. I remember about 6 years ago we had just parked our car at Mt. Rushmore and I led the way up the steps toward the attraction. As I turned turned toward another flight of stairs, I just fell onto the landing for no known reason. I was dumbfounded. Sadly, this sometimes happens in my spiritual walk as well. There’s always a reason for stumbling, but sometimes logic goes out the window. Thank you for this encouragement to stand on Jesus, the Rock.

Karen says:

Appreciate you sharing your story of stumbling, Stephan. I pray we stand on Jesus the R.O.C.K.: Rest in Him, Occupy the narrow path, Chase Holiness, Keep our eyes on Jesus. God bless!
