A Little Talk with Jesus: Book Giveaway

A Little Talk with Jesus: Book Giveaway, by Adobe SparkLet’s have a little talk with Jesus.

Today we’re talking about having a talk with Jesus. Simply, prayer. A talk of the highest nature.

I’m sharing some of my own thoughts on prayer and reviewing a great book on the topic for a giveaway.

Maybe, like me, you’ve experienced times of uncertainty when it comes to prayer. And perhaps we all go through times of wondering if prayer really works or even matters.

A Little Talk With Jesus

Oh, great prayer quotes float around online. But here’s some of my favorite words about prayer:

  1. “None can believe how powerful prayer is, and what it is able to effect, but those who have learned it by experience.” ~ Martin Luther
  2. “Our prayers may be awkward. Our attempts may be feeble. But since the power of prayer is in the one who hears it and not in the one who says it, our prayers do make a difference.” ~ Max Lucado
  3. “The Christian life is not a constant high. I have my moments of deep discouragement. I have to go to God in prayer with tears in my eyes, and say, ‘O God, forgive me,’ or ‘Help me.'” ~ Billy Graham
  4. “Prayer is the exercise of drawing on the grace of God.” ~ Oswald Chambers
  5. “God shapes the world by prayer. The more praying there is in the world the better the world will be, the mightier the forces against evil.” ~ Mother Teresa

Big Talks with Jesus

My own personal story captures the sheer power of prayer. You see, for years I prayed for my biological father, a self-proclaimed atheist.

After I met Jesus as Savior at sixteen, I prayed daily for my dad to believe in God and accept Christ as Lord. I inserted my father’s name in Scriptures like John 3:16 and Romans 10:9.A Little Talk with Jesus: Book Giveaway, by Adobe Spark

And God answered my prayers. Yet, not in a few months or even a few years. But my prayer came true after sixteen years.

This not only taught me the importance of talking to Jesus, but I also learned to never give up on my prayers or my loved ones. And in the process, it drew me closer to God.

Here’s my all time favorite quote about prayer:

“The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working” (James 5:16b, ESV.)

Talking With Jesus

Now, on to the book review. Talking to Jesus: A Fresh Perspective on Prayer by Jeannie Blackmer.

The author starts right out of the gate in the introduction on what prayer is not. Prayer is “not a well thought out speech that would impress anyone listening.” Still, “it’s not a formal act provided only in the sanctuary of a church.”

#Prayer is simply talking to #Jesus anytime, anywhere, about anything. Jeannie Blackmer Click To Tweet

But while Jeannie herself admits she’s not an expert or theologian, she is a pray-er. Who more perfect to write a book on prayer than someone who practices it?

The book is comprised of stories from the gospel of Matthew and written using fiction-style techniques. Stories drawing the reader into the setting, the people, and Jesus’ part in it all.

Jeannie paints Bible Stories in a different light than you’ve heard or read before: the leper, the rich young man, feeding the 5000, disciples in a storm, and more.

Still further, each chapter concludes with sections for personal reflection and observation including writing out prayers. What a fabulous book on prayer.

Oh yes! Prayer is my most favorite topic in the Bible, well besides Jesus…of course 🙂
I read something the other day that caused me to stop and think, WOW!…it said, when we pray, are we kneeling right beside Jesus and we pray together with him…isn’t that an awesome thought…to think that all the times we’ve prayed, Jesus has been right there beside us the whole time kneeling and praying with us…he is our advocate after all…but I never had the visual of him actually kneeling with me as I pray…I don’t know, it really touched my heart when I read that. God is so awesome and we really and truly are never alone! This post was one of my favorites…thank you for sharing your life and for promoting others who have such faith and insight that will encourage others. <3 U!

Karen says:

Marla, prayer and Jesus? Yes, me too sweet friend! And I love what you read about Jesus kneeling beside us, thanks for sharing. Now, I’ll imagine Him with me…that’s powerful and comforting. Love and hugs to one special lady!

Becky Smith says:

Thank you for sharing this on Heart”wings” – our readers’ nook! I have learned by experience how powerful prayer is. I stand continually amazed that God just wants to talk with me and to hear my voice!! Amazing!

Karen says:

Thanks, Becky, for commenting and sharing your thoughts. Yes! It is truly amazing the Lord pursues us for an intimate relationship then continues it through prayer and our time with Him. Oh, may we never ever underestimate the power of prayer! Blessings!

Meg Gemelli says:

I’m always in need of good prayer resources. I talk to God on and off all day long, but need constant reminders about actually praying with power. What a wonderful topic as we journey through Advent. Have a wonderful week Karen!

Karen says:

Thank you, Meg. And I need those reminders on praying with power too. What I’ve come to love about prayer is not only does it move mountains and change me, but prayer also brings me so much closer to the heavenly Father in intimacy. Blessings! 🙂

Fran Maynard says:

Love how you explained our talk with Jesus and that it’s not in the power of our prayer but in the One who hears it! And what an incredible testimony about your Father…. I too was prayed for, for many years before I came to His saving grace, so I can attest to the power of prayer, it is an amazing thing! Thank you for sharing your heart.

Karen says:

Fran, thanks for commenting and sharing your personal story of people praying for you and never giving up on you. Grateful the power of prayer lies with Jesus, for in Him all things are possible! Blessings! 🙂

Emily M Wood says:

Karen, Thank you for sharing your testimony about your dad! This is such a wonderufl post on prayer! Have you ever read CircleMaker by Mark Batterson? That book revolutionized my prayer life! I have personally seen the power of prayer in my own life! I prayed and prayed and prayed for a child….and after losing 5 pregnancies I was to the point of giving up on prayer…..but God is faithful. He gave me a son with the name I had already CHOSEN through adoption and he blessed me with two more boys by birth. God hears our prayers!

Karen says:

Wow, Emily! That’s really neat about your adoption story, especially after reading about Katie’s today on your blog. 🙂 Children are a gift from the Lord. How wonderful that your quiver is full. And, yes, love The Circle Maker. Thanks for sharing your personal account of how prayer changes things.

Karen, thank you for reviewing Talking to Jesus. I’m thrilled to hear this book adds a freshness to prayer lives. Keep talking to Jesus.

Karen says:

You’re welcome, Jeannie. I loved the book and was glad to review and do a giveaway. I hope we never underestimate the power of talking to Jesus. Blessings! Praying continued favor and anointing over this book and most of all, God’s glory. 🙂
