Remember Who God Is in the Storm: Pray for Mike

Friend, are you in the middle of a storm right now? My hand’s raised. Last week I shared the story of my husband’s heart attack 3 weeks ago and how he’s still in critical care. But we can remember who God is in the storm.

Although this is undoubtedly one of the darkest storms of our lives. We continue to trust in our God and remember who He is.

Because embracing what we know is true about God strengthens our heart, gives understanding and peace to our minds, and keeps us focused on God—especially smack dab in the middle of a storm.

And it’s not if but when we find ourselves in one of life’s storms. So let’s look at some truths about God that help us in the storms of life.

Remember Who God Is – In Control

(1.) Living. Our God is alive and well. Jeremiah compares man-made idols to the living God. “But the Lord is the true God; he is the living God.” Jeremiah 10:10 (ESV)

Mike will have open heart surgery next week to place a permanent heart pump. Over the last 3 weeks and while Mike awaits surgery, we worship a living God who hears our pleas and prayers for healing and care over him.

(2.) God Does What He Says He Will Do. Look at Numbers 23:19, “God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?” (ESV)

During this storm of Mike’s heart failure, we rest in how God is always faithful to His promises. You see, God is the ultimate promise keeper.

(3.) In control. “For the Lord of hosts has purposed, and who will annul it? His hand is stretched out, and who will turn it back?” Isaiah 14:27 (ESV)

We find such comfort knowing that no one or no-thing can thwart God’s plan for Mike. Even though we continue to pray for his medical team’s wisdom and for healing, Mike’s life rests in the

Remember Who God Is – Light

(4.) Almighty. “‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.’” Revelation 1:8 (ESV)

How amazing to know the Almighty is fighting for us in the storm. He is with us in the beginning, middle, and end of the storm. He guides us through. We feel His power daily.

(5.) Light. “God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.” 1 John 1:5b (ESV)

Remember Who God Is in the Storm: Pray for Mike

Lord, thank You for providing light in this storm. While the winds howl around us and the skies darken, You are the Light of the world, a beacon guiding us through to the other side of a storm.

Remember Who God Is – Able

(6.) Good. God is good and does good (Psalm 119:68). God cannot not be Good.

We know God’s goodness follows us all the days of our lives (Psalm 23), stormy days included. We always look back and see His footprints in our lives. God is still good in this storm. When life is not good, God is.

(7.) All-knowing. Omniscient. God knows the number of hairs on our head (Matthew 10:30), counts and names the stars (Psalm 147:4), and knows all things (1 John 3:20).

Thank you, Lord, for creating Mike and how intimate are Your ways and thoughts toward him. God, You know everything about Mike. You care about him as a loving Father tenderly cares for a son.

(8.) Able. God “is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.” Ephesians 3:20 (ESV)

When Mike was a lead pastor, he once had our congregation commit Ephesians 3:20 (and verse 21) to memory. During this storm, I’m clinging to this scripture with all my being. I even read it over Mike recently then prayed with him.

God. Is. Able.

Please Pray for Mike

After looking at all Mike’s tests and history since the heart attack, his heart team is concerned that the original plan this week of stents won’t help him or his heart function. The blood flow would not increase over his heart where he needs it. And they cannot stent the LAD artery (widow maker) where his heart attack happened. So, the LVAD -permanent heart pump is his best option and he will be a candidate for a heart transplant in 6 months.

Our storm continues to see calmer days to days it rages out of control. Mike’s open heart surgery is next week to place the heart pump. And even though this is one of the scariest parts of our storm, we know God is living, does what He says, is in control, the Almighty and our Light in the darkness. He is good, all-knowing, and able. Praise His Holy and Matchless Name!

There’s hope in the storm. It’s JESUS.

Jesus is the only sure hope we cling to in the darkness…in the storm.

Please pray for all these specifics, for his heart team’s wisdom and care, for his healing from the Lord, for God’s watchcare over him during surgery, and that all of us rest in the surpassing peace of The Prince of Peace.
