There’s No Easy Road That Leads to Holiness

There's No Easy Road That Leads to Holiness

There’s no easy road that leads to holiness. Why? Because the road that leads to being holy is the way of a true follower of Jesus. It means seeking His face daily and growing in His image.

God calls us to holiness: “As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.'” 1 Peter 14-16 (ESV)

Yet, God knows, without Christ, it’s impossible. Our flesh battles against holiness, desiring to pursue the indulgences the world offers.

There's no easy road that leads to holiness. Why? Because the road that leads to being holy is the way of a true follower of Jesus. It means seeking His face daily and growing in His image. Share on X

Holiness Forms Deep Inside Us

You see, holiness forms deep inside as we spend time with a Holy God, then shows up outwardly in how we live our lives.

Spending time with our Holy God includes: meditating on God’s Word, being in His holy presence in worship (Psalm 96:9) and prayer, keeping in step with the Spirit not to fulfill the lusts of the flesh (Galatians 5), growing in the fruit of the Spirit, and becoming more and more like Jesus every day.

Also, let me note here that if you haven’t known Jesus long, having a strong Christian disciple and mentor you helps build you up in the faith. And a chuch community of other believers and Bible studies encourages you on the road to holiness.

Obedience Leads to Holiness

Notice again how part of holiness is obedience to the Lord as above in I Peter 1:14. “As obedient children” we strive for holiness.

When we obey the Lord, consecrate (set ourselves apart to God) it leads to holiness. And others take notice of who our God is.

We are set apart from unrighteousness for God’s holiness.

Holiness Not Religion

Let’s never mistake true obedience to God and His Word with religious rites and traditions. Even the religious leaders in Jesus time on earth missed it. They missed Jesus. But He is the source of holiness.

There's No Easy Road That Leads to Holiness

Religion will fail us. Denominations will cease to exist. But Jesus never fails and He is holy and eternal.

My writer friend, Melinda Inman, expressed it this way:

“How many of us are living in a self-made religion keeping a list of rules? Following these earthly practices of religion were (and remain) futile in growing the knowledge of Christ that Paul was trying to encourage among believers.”

Growing in the Knowledge of Christ

I believe the path to growing in the knowledge of Christ and becoming more and more holy is partly found in Galatians 2:20-21:

“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not nullify the grace of God, for if justification were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.” (ESV)

We no longer live to ourselves, we let Christ live in us and through us.

And a Holy Savior gave Himself for us. Calvary. Where Holiness took our place for mercy’s sake.

Resembling Jesus Leads to Holiness

One of the most important aspects of the CHRISTian life is resembling Jesus more and more every day. If we miss this, we miss it, we miss holiness.

Because only through the power of the Holy Spirit can we hope to resemble Christ.

Add your name to this verse:

_______ is part of a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, that ______ may proclaim the excellencies of him who called her/him out of darkness into his marvelous light. (1 Peter 2:9 ESV, Emphasis added)

Prayers for Holiness

Lord, empower us through the Holy Spirit to live a Christian life that’s consistent in words and actions Sunday to Saturday. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Holy Spirit, fall fresh on me. Set my heart on fire to share the gospel, live by the Spirit, walk in the Spirit, and keep in step with the Spirit—both offline and online. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Lord, give us the strength to set our mind on things above, hide your Word in our heart, daily put on the full armor of God, walk in the light, love you with all our heart, soul and mind, and praise your holy name above all names. In Jesus’ name. Amen!

I loved the prayer you included where we filled in the blank with our own name, Karen. That truly brings home the message of living holy and right lives for Jesus’ sake and to the glory of God. Such an inspiring message today. Blessings!

Karen says:

Thank you, Martha. I so enjoy inserting my name in scripture to remind my heart of God’s Word and often my obedience. Let’s stay on the road to holiness, eyes on Jesus, never turning back. God bless!

Great message. Our words and actions can lead us and others closer to God. Blessings! 🙂

Karen says:

God bless, Melissa. When we obey the Lord, consecrate (set ourselves apart to God) it leads to holiness. And others take notice of who our God is.

So true Karen. The road may not be easy but the benefits and retirement plans are so worth it.

Karen says:

Yes they are, Yvonne. Thank you!

Karen, thank you for this encouraging article. Sometimes we feel like since our salvation was free, then becoming more like Jesus will be a cake walk. But your message here is true. And soul-strengthening. I loved these lines: “We no longer live to ourselves, we let Christ live in us and through us. And a Holy Savior gave Himself for us. Calvary. Where Holiness took our place for mercy’s sake.” Jesus is worth it.

Karen says:

Jesus is worth it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Melissa. God bless!
