Some Things in Life are Overrated But Not This

“I don’t know what all the fuss is about. That movie’s overrated.”

My words became a frustrated howl as my friend and I left the theater.

We’d watched a new film with four and five star reviews. And over the short weeks since its debut, everywhere I turned people raved, applauded even, as the movie to go see.

I know these things can be subjective. Still, I didn’t understand the fanfare or hoopla for this one. At first, my friend defended the movie’s awesome-ness.

But finally a confession about the lead actor. “I’m his number one fan.” Then my friend admitted she’d seen better movies. But when we’re smitten and awestruck, our affections remain rock-solid.

Life offers a plethora of stuff to go crazy over. Misplaced affections steer us to overrate people and things. Besides movies, I’ll mention a few more scenarios perhaps you’ll relate to.

Overrated Things

  • Restaurants. A new eatery opens in your town. The local news covers the grand opening and shows footage of happy-thumbs-up guests. So you decide to check it out. In addition to a forty-five minute wait, your wallet takes a hard hit. You’re reminded of why you enjoy the small and economical diner down the road. Which has good food by the way.
  • Great Aunt Bessie’s famous casserole. Let me add a disclaimer here. I don’t have a great aunt or any relative with the name, Bessie. If you do or if your name is Bessie, I’m truly sorry. I’ll make my point and then move on to non-food things. We all have that family member who believes their green bean casserole or chicken casserole wins the blue ribbon. And while it may be good, isn’t it just a tad overrated?
  • TV shows. We’ve already established that most things, like movies, can be subjective andOverrated, image text by Adobe Sparkstrictly based on individual opinion and preference. TV shows fit this criteria. Maybe I’m the oddball out, but I usually don’t get the camaraderie associated with popular television shows. Particularly the ones that end up on “the best TV shows of 2016.” I even found a link for shows you must “binge-watch-right-now.” I do have my favorite shows, yet I’m not a TV enthusiast except for the Hallmark channel.
  • Places and Cities. “You must go on vacation to…. It’s the best place to visit.” And while my family authentically enjoyed a few of our friends referrals, to us, it didn’t rate as “best” or even a “must go to” place. For my family, they’re highly overrated.

The One Thing

What about you? Have you ever thought something in life was overrated? A place, movie, song, restaurant, or your great aunt’s famous casserole?

Me too.

There’s one thing the ratings can’t explain with such power it can’t be underestimated.

Amazing Grace.

Oh, the world thinks grace is nothing to go crazy over. But it is.

The world wonders if being lost, then found is overrated. But it isn’t.

Culture believes that once we were blind, but now we see is overrated. But it isn’t.

The enemy tries to sell the idea that the cross of Calvary’s highly overrated. But it isn’t.

Jesus can never be overpraised, over-esteemed, over-magnified, or over-valued. Click To Tweet

“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God” Romans 5:1-2 NIV.
