32 Things to Know And Celebrate About God

For last week’s post, I wanted us to know the 52 Reasons to Connect With a Local Church. While I never intended to publish another “list” article so soon, my plans changed. You see, the church as the body of Christ only exists because God exists.

Since we gained knowledge about the church and celebrated its attributes, it makes sense to know and celebrate the many things that make God, God.

Things To Know About God

(1.) The One true God. Oh, there are other gods. But there’s no other god like our God. “For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me.” (Isaiah 46:9b)

(2.) Living. Jeremiah compares man-made idols to the living God. “But the Lord is the true God; he is the living God.” (Jeremiah 10:10) How sad and foolish when we bow to idols without breath. Or, believe in gods who are dead.

(3.) Creator. Genesis 1:1 tells us in the beginning God created…. God existed first. Then He created everything else, all of creation, and humans in His image.

(4.) Holy. The Blue Letter Bible shares, “God is holy means there is no trace of evil in his character. Only God is holy.” Further, “There is no one holy like the LORD.” (1 Samuel 2:2a)

(5.) Sovereign. God rules as the supreme authority, doing what pleases Him (Psalm 115:3), His kingdom rules over all (Psalm 103:19).

(6.) In control. “For the Lord of hosts has purposed, and who will annul it? His hand is stretched out, and who will turn it back?” (Isaiah 14:27)

(7.) Majestic. “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! (Psalm 8:9)

(8.) Almighty. “‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.’” (Revelation 1:8)

God's the One true God. Oh, there are other gods. But there’s no other god like our God. Isaiah 46:9, ESV: For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. #GodisGreat Click To Tweet

Things That Make God, God

(9.) Love. “Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” (1 John 4:8)

(10.) Judge. God judges righteously, tests hearts, repays evil, and holds vengeance. (Jeremiah 11:20)

(11.) Most high. In Psalm 83, Asaph petitions God not to be silent against enemies, “That they may know that You alone, whose name is the LORD, Are the Most High over all the earth.” (Verse 18)

(12.) Reigning King. The Lord reigns over all (Psalm 47:8), reigns forever (Exodus 15:18), and sits as King forever (Psalm 29:10).

(13.) Light. “God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5b)

(14.) Magnificent. Impressively beautiful, elaborate, or extravagant; striking (Google). “God is magnificent; he can never be praised enough. There are no boundaries to his greatness.” (Psalm 145:3, MSG)

(15.) Good. God is good and does good (Psalm 119:68); He is good and ready to forgive and abundant in lovingkindness (Psalm 86:5).

Things About God to Celebrate

(16.) Merciful. “The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.” (Psalm 103:8)

(17.) Faithful. “God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” (1 Corinthians 1:9)

(18.) I AM. “God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM’; and He said, Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” (Exodus 3:14). I AM comes from the Hebrew word (hayah) meaning “to be” or “exist” (Blue Letter Bible).

(19.) Omnipresent. “‘Can a man hide himself in hiding places So I do not see him?’ declares the LORD ‘Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?’ declares the LORD.” (Jeremiah 23:24)

(20.) All-knowing. Omniscient. God knows the number of hairs on our head (Matthew 10:30), counts and names the stars (Psalm 147:4), and knows all things (1 John 3:20).

(21.) Eternal. “Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.” (1 Timothy 1:17)

(22.) Able. God “is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.” (Ephesians 2:20)

(23.) Unchanging. “For I the Lord do not change.” (Malachi 3:6a)

God is all-knowing. He knows the number of hairs on our head (Matthew 10:30), counts and names the stars (Psalm 147:4), and knows all things (1 John 3:20). #Christian #Blog Click To Tweet

(25.) Provider. “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19)

(26.) Shepherd. Psalm 23:1 says, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” God as Shepherd makes me lie down in green pastures, leads me beside still waters, and restores my soul. (Verses 2-3)

(27.) Worthy. “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power.” (Revelation 4:11)

Hallelujah! What a mighty God we serve! Karen, I am worshiping along with you as I read! I have always found such power when we stop and consider again who God is, in all of His glory. Though of course, we can never capture all of who God is, but to take in even a little bit, He is magnificent beyond words! I love the way you captured God’s character and names and illustrated each one with scripture. May the beauty and majesty of our God capture our hearts again today!

Karen says:

Amen, sweet sister! God is mighty and worthy of our unending praise. When we consider all these attributes about Him and more, we want to shout it to the world and it changes our lives! “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! (Psalm 8:9, ESV)

Karen, I loved this list and all its scripture references. Reading it, I felt like I was in the middle of a worship and praise service! Thanks for blessing us all with God’s Word today.

Karen says:

Glad you found this worshipful, Martha! It shows how much your soul jumps for a chance to worship when you recognize God’s wonderful characteristics! “Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.” (1 Timothy 1:17, ESV)

One of my favorite names for God is “I AM.” It’s so powerful and pretty much covers everything. Every one of the attributes you list (I LOVE the list), tell us things that God IS or Does.
Your post is a bright spot in my day!

Karen says:

Thanks, Beckie! Yes, God IS and DOES, and He IS our bright spot every day! “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power.” (Revelation 4:11, ESV)

Cathy Baker says:

It’s hard to choose but I would say God’s sovereignty. In it, we find peace and true rest knowing He is in control. Thank you for sharing this list. What an awesome God we serve!

Karen says:

Cathy, I celebrate God’s sovereingty more and more these days. I believe because of the peace in knowing I don’t have to strive to fix things or to worry about today or tomorrow. Glad He’s God (and I’m not) and He has complete authority. Thanks for adding your thoughts!

We can never run out of things to appreciate about God! I think these days I am in awe of His magnificence. He’s created so much. He’s done so much, to great lengths. He’s given so much. And He’s oh so close to us and so much more. The more we open our eyes and ears, the more we recognize His magnificence. Love it!

Karen says:

Me and you both, Stephen. I am in complete awe of the Lord. And so true, the more we look for God’s magnificence, the more aware we are of it in our lives. God, you are magnificent: Impressively beautiful, elaborate, or extravagant; striking (Google).

Yvonne Morgan says:

What a wonderful list of things to appreciate about God. Thanks for taking the time to prepare list for us, they help focus us on the important aspects of a subject. This list especially reminds me to thank God for everything He has done for me. We serve and worship an incredible God.

Karen says:

Yes, Yvonne. God. Is. Incredible! Hallelujah! We serve and worship Him not only because of what He has done, but also for who He is!

How do I chose which one I celebrate most?! Praise Him that He is all things holy! Thank you for bringing Him glory through this post!

Karen says:

Agree, Emily! His holiness is praiseworthy, brings us to our knees, and sets a fire in our souls to desire holiness in our own lives.“There is no one holy like the LORD.” (1 Samuel 2:2a, ESV)

This is a great list! Thank you for reminding me of all the wonderful things that are about our God. There is one thing that that was interesting, too, when you mention other “gods,” is that according to my studies, those “gods” are actually demons. So, if people worship other gods, what they are really worshipping are demons! It’s no wonder that our God said “have no other gods besides me.” It’s to honor Him and to protect us!

Karen says:

Appreciate your input, Lisa. I wasn’t familiar with the fact that other gods can be demons. I guess I just think about the Old Testament stories of the children of Israel in idol worship or turning to pagan gods. Yet, I see how if those gods aren’t the one true God, their origin must be demonic. Thanks for sharing!

Debra Jean says:

Love, Love this Karen! It’s like reading the lyrics to a great praise song. It is always good to think about God’s goodness and grace! This lifted my heart within the first couple. My favorite is Magnificent I don’t usually like the Message, however this one really speaks out! Many Thanks 8)

Karen says:

Hi Debra, So glad this was encouraging and lifted your heart. Focusing on praise and God’s goodness and grace is always a good thing. I’m kind of like you, normally I tend to stay away from some versions of the Bible, because they are only paraphrases and not an actual translation. It’s why I normally use ESV or NIV. But on occasion, something like this jumps out at me and portrays something both beautiful and powerful: “God is magnificent; he can never be praised enough. There are no boundaries to his greatness.” (Psalm 145:3, MSG)

Amazing list of reasons to praise and worship such a great God!

Karen says:

Thank you, Nancy! “‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.’” (Revelation 1:8, ESV)

My favorite is #12: Reigning King. The Lord reigns over all (Psalm 47:8), reigns forever (Exodus 15:18), and sits as King forever (Psalm 29:10).

He reigns and rules so I can expect all things to work together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose! Truly, there is no god like ours!

Karen says:

Agree, Beth! I find great comfort that God is reigning with all authority over the world and my world. Great are you Lord!

Jessica Brodie says:

Praise God! He is holy, unchanging, able, holy and almighty! He is everything! We are so blessed.

Karen says:

Yes, we are! God is faithful, by whom Jessica was called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. (1 Corinthians 1:9)

I absolutely love your lists. They always teach me something new or remind me and encourage me about something I’ve forgotten. Thank you!

Karen says:

Aw, thanks so much, Stephanie! And boy, don’t I need those reminders often to remmeber who God is and His promises! God as Shepherd makes us lie down in green pastures, leads us beside still waters, restores our soul, so we shall not want. (Psalm 23)

Yes! I love this list! I’m so grateful you shared it with us! Now I’m sharing it too!

Karen says:

Thanks for reading and sharing, Rebecca. One of the great things about lists is how they capture (all in one place and space) a lot of information on the subject at hand. While my list is certainly not exhaustive about God, I’m thankful it’s a reminder about how great is our God!

I could (and should) sit and soak in this list of Things to Know and Celebrate About God for hours!

But even a couple of minutes changes my outlook and focus for today!

Thank you!

Karen says:

Soaking in everything about God and His wonderful attributes is something we all could and should do, Aryn. And I so agree on how it changes our focus and outlook. Thanks for adding to the conversation.

Beth says:

Thank you for serving up so many reminders from Scripture about our amazing God, Karen! This is a post that needs to be printed out, pinned and remembered for all its worth! Love it!

Karen says:

Hey Beth, I love the idea of printing this list and keeping it somewhere as a reminder to focus on all that makes God, God. Sometimes we are guilty (I know I am) of only concentrating on one or a few aspects of God’s character. But He’s not only 100% love, He’s also 100% judge. Thanks for contributing.

Lisa notes says:

It’s always good to be reminded of things to know about God, things that make him God, and things to celebrate about him. He is so worthy! “I AM” is one of my favorites.

Karen says:

“I AM” is the perfect God-attribute to help us remember all that God is and does! Thanks, Lisa!

Hadassah says:

What a great post! I find it very helpful to remember and focus on who our God is and what His character is like. I like to recall His mercy, power and wisdom. Thank you so much for this powerful reminder!

Karen says:

God’s mercy, power, and wisdom are all great things to celebrate about our great God. Thanks for your thoughts.

What a wonderful, beautiful, glorious God that we serve. I am so thankful to be His child. This is a wonderful list, Karen, and a great resource. Thank you!

Karen says:

Wendy, I celebrate our God who is holy, majestic, magnificent, in control, sovereign, eternal, shepherd, oh, the list goes on and on and on!

Heather Hart says:

I love this post, Karen! One of my favorite attributes of God is that He is all-knowing. I love that nothing catches Him off-guard. Nothing surprises Him. He knows what’s coming and we can trust that He can use it for His glory, come what may.

Karen says:

I find God’s knowledge so comforing as well, Heather. I love how you worded it as nothing surprises Him or catches Him off-guard. Trusting and resting in that today!

Jana says:

Praise the Lord! This list stirs my heart. I’ve been preparing a 30-day Bible-reading challenge for my readers for September on the theme of Who God Is, and your list just reinforced all the wonderful Truths I’ve been focusing on! The attributes of God I find myself praising Him for the most are His sovereignty and His faithfulness. I am in awe of Him.

Karen says:

Thank you, Jana. And your reading challenge sounds amazing. Yes, He’s forever faithful and sovereign and deserves our complete awe!

Carolyn says:

What a wonderful post! These are such amazing reminders, especially in times where we may feel otherwise. Thank you for sharing this.

Karen says:

Thanks, Carolyn. Just putting this list together sparked my faith in a God who is steady, stable, and never changes. So, we can depend on how none of His characteristics will ever change. He continues to be all these things to us and more!

Lesley says:

Such a great reminder of the amazingness of God! I am always struck by how although he is so awesome and mighty he still sees, and cares for, each individual.

Karen says:

Lesley, I like that “the amazingness of God.” Amen, sister!
