6 Things That Must Flee in Jesus’ Name

6 Things That Must Flee in Jesus’ Name

We claim victory over our battles and overcome our strongholds in Jesus’ Name.

Sometimes things and people take flight and flee from us. Maybe, this fleeing causes us pain.

Yet, often fleeing becomes a good thing for our overall wellness.

Like those things that cause harm to our spiritual well-being. And they must flee in Jesus’ Name.

(1.)  Satan, our enemy, flees in Jesus’ Name.

In James 4, the Bible cautions us against worldliness that makes us God’s enemy. Rather, in humility we are to:

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”  James 4:7-8 (ESV)

When we stay near to God, the enemy has no choice but to hightail it out of our life.

But until we submit our entire being to God, we can’t resist the devil—not in our own strength.

So when we submit to God and draw near to Him, we send Satan running!

(2.)  Spiritual forces of darkness.

The spirit world is a very real thing, both the spirits of light and darkness.

“As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling. She followed Paul and us, crying out, ‘These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.’ And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, ‘I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.’ And it came out that very hour.” Acts 16:16-18 (ESV)

Jesus, “canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.” Colossians 2:14 (ESV)

“And Peter said to them, ‘Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’” Acts 2:38 (ESV)

(3.)  Spiritual death flees in Jesus’ Name.

“‘O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?’” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 15:55-57 (ESV)

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23 (ESV)

How amazing to know spiritual death must flee the moment we accept God’s gift of eternal life.

(4.) Lust, sin, temptation.

Jesus living in us helps us overcome temptation, sin, and lustful passions. There’s power in calling on His name.

“So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.” 2 Timothy 2:22 (ESV)

“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13 (ESV)

(5.)  Fear flees in Jesus’ Name.

God is not the source of fear. Instead, it originates from the enemy of our souls. Look at 2 Timothy 1:7,

“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” (ESV)

And if God doesn’t give us a spirit of fear, then it comes from Satan. God gave us a spirit of power and love and self-control. And notice the verb gave is past tense. We already possess power over fear, we just need to access it.

In the name of Jesus, fear must flee.

(6.)  Our old life.

I’m so grateful my old life is gone and new spiritually abundant life has come in the Name of Jesus.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)

“We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.” Romans 6:4 (ESV)

Interesting that of your six points, in five of them we are to stand firm, but in one (#4) WE are the ones who are to flee!

Karen says:

That’s right, Ava. We have the job to flee lust and sinful desires. Only in the power of Jesus’ name are we able to do this. And just speaking His name causes the other things to flee from us. Thanks for sharing.

Yvonne Morgan says:

I do claim victory over each stronghold in my life. Thanks Karen.

Karen says:

Wonderful, Yvonne. Everything unhealthy to our spiritual health must flee in Jesus’ name.

Jessica Brodie says:

This is so powerful. Sometimes it’s hard to understand why certain people or things (jobs, etc.) in our lives “flee.” But in context with understanding how darkness must flee the light, it’s incredibly encouraging to remember that perhaps that person or situation is gone because of their toxicity!

Karen says:

Jessica, I tend to think like you. It very well could have been the Lord protecting us from situations and people. Thanks for sharing!

Such an inspiring post, Karen. We can trust that Jesus will keep the devil at bay when we are firmly committed to our belief in Him.
Blessings!

Karen says:

Yes, Martha. He who’s in us is greater than he that is in the world! Hallelujah!

Saying His name. Jesus. When I am lost and trials arise, I say His name and peace covers me. Thank You Lord.

Karen says:

Melissa, it’s a powerful name indeed. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.

I often get so discouraged by the state of our world and its effects on my loved ones. This is such powerful encouragement, Karen. Thank you.

Karen says:

So thankful this encouraged you, Lauren. In this day and time, discouragement often squeezes out our joy and dependence on the Lord (His control and watchcare over us).

Fear flees in Jesus’ name. In our large family there’s almost always some type of dilemma or need or change that could possibly inspire fear for safety and well-being, UNLESS we turn to Jesus, giving them to Him. He has brought us through so much!

Karen says:

Such a good testimony to the Lord helping us overcoming fear. We will always be fearful in the what if’s but we are fear-less in Christ. God is not the source of fear.

Thanks for the encouragement as always, Karen!

Karen says:

Glad this encouraged you, Nancy. In the name of Jesus, fear must flee.

J.D. Wininger says:

Wonderful, grace-filled words my friend. Something many of us struggle with sometimes is remembering to heed the warnings of the Holy Spirit in our lives. There’s been times when I have felt a tugging at my heart, “Stop! Don’t do this! Don’t linger here!” I call them “spiritual alarm bells” as I will sense them going off, but choose to ignore them. The result when doing so? We fall headlong into the swamp of sin. It’s wonderful to know that God already knows we’re flawed humans, but I think He takes great joy in seeing us struggle to grow closer to (and more dependent upon) Him with each day. Great post, as always ma’am.

Karen says:

I like your, “spiritual alarm bells.” That’s a great and humbling description for our need to heed to the Holy Spirit’s voice and direction. Thanks for adding your insight. “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13 (ESV)

Heather Smith says:

Amen!!

Karen says:

“‘O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?’” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 15:55-57 (ESV)

Joanne Viola says:

“Yet, often fleeing becomes a good thing for our overall wellness.” Karen, I have often viewed myself as one who runs from various situations. So I have seen it in a negative light. Thank you for flipping this for me so I could view it positively as there are times we are to flee; and there are times we are to call on the One who can make things flee in His Name.

Karen says:

You make a great point, Joanne. For our spiritual well-being, fleeing can be a good thing and forces of darkness fleeing from us adds to our spiritual wellness. Thanks for sharing. God bless!

Yvonne Chase says:

Sometimes things and people take flight and flee from us and sometimes God removes us from those things providing a way of escape.

Karen says:

Yes, agree 100%. It’s one of those good things for our overall wellness. Thanks, Yvonne. Hope you are well.
