8 Powerful Head-to-toe Prayers in the Bible: Part 1

Often, we forget to pray specific, powerful prayers. Like prayers taken directly from God’s Word that are powerful when spoken over our lives.

So, in this 2-part series, we address 8 of the issues we face as believers from head to toe. And the powerful help we need from the Bible.

This week we cover prayers for our mind, eyes, ears, and mouth. But, please, also use these powerful prayers for your spouse, children, family, and friends.

(1.) Mind

Scripture:

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” Colossians 3:2 NIV.

“What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but…from God, so that we may understand….We have the mind of Christ” 1 Corinthians 2:12,16 NIV.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” Romans 12:2a NIV.

“…whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable…think about such things” Philippians 4:8 NIV.

“We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:5 ESV.

Prayer: Father God, You created my mind, so I submit it to Your care. Help me set my mind on eternal things. And taking every thought captive, making it obedient to Your truth. I cast out every lie from the enemy. Help me meditate on what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, and excellent of praise. Let Your Spirit renew my mind daily in Your Word. Give me the mind of Christ. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Father God, You created my mind, so I submit it to Your care. Help me set my mind on eternal things. And taking every thought captive, making it obedient to Your truth. Let Your Spirit renew my mind daily in Your Word. #Prayer Click To Tweet

(2.) Eyes

Scripture:

8 Powerful Head-to-toe Prayers in the Bible: Part 1 Photo by Christian Kielberg on Unsplash

Deceived by the serpent, Eve ate the forbidden fruit and gave it to Adam. “…when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes…” Genesis 3:6a ESV.

Do not love the things in the world…the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes (see 1 John 2:15-16).

David evaluates integrity. “I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless” Psalm 101:3a ESV.

Prayer: Lord, Your Word reminds me how my eyes can cause me to sin. Help me turn my eyes away from lust and temptations like overspending, addictions, and sexual immorality. I desire integrity in You. So help me not set certain things before my eyes including stuff on TV and online. It doesn’t bring honor to You, but defiles my flesh. And stunts my growth in You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Lord, Your Word reminds me how my eyes can cause me to sin. Help me turn my eyes away from lust and temptations like overspending, addictions, and sexual immorality. I desire integrity in You. #Prayer Click To Tweet

(3.) Ears

Scripture:

Diligently listen to the voice of the Lord.” Give ear to his commandments. Keep all his statutes. (See Exodus 15:26 ESV).

“Your ears will hear a word behind you, ‘This is the way, walk in it'” Isaiah 30:21a NASB.

In Zechariah 7, the Lord calls for kindness, justice, and mercy. “They refused to pay attention…and stopped their ears that they might not hear” (verse 11 ESV).

“They will not endure sound doctrinewanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate…teachers…to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth…turn aside to myths” 2 Timothy 4:3-4 NASB.

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in…dine with him and he with Me” Revelation 3:20 NASB.

Prayer: God, I want to be a child who diligently listens to my heavenly Father’s voice. To really hear Your truth. Show me the way by opening my ears to Your voice. Never stopping up my ears like a stubborn child. But welcoming Your truth in my life and never turning away to myths. When I accepted Christ as Savior, I opened the door of my heart to You for the first time. Now, help me hear You knock so I may dine with You daily. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

(4.) Mouth

Scripture:

8 Powerful Head-to-toe Prayers in the Bible: Part 1, Photo by ELIAS VICARIO on Unsplash

“Let the words of my mouthbe acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer” Psalm 19:14 ESV.

Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips!” Psalm 141:3 ESV.

Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord…” Proverbs 12:22a ESV.

“Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth.” But only…as is good for edification…grace to those who hear (see Ephesians 4:29 ESV).

“Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving” Ephesians 5:4 ESV.

Prayer: Lord, I pray the words of my mouth are acceptable to You and I keep my lips from lies. Set a guard over my mouth so that instead of foolish words, they give grace and build others up. Let my mouth praise You with thanksgiving. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Lord, I pray the words of my mouth are acceptable to You and I keep my lips from lies. Set a guard over my mouth so that instead of foolish words, they give grace and build others up. Let my mouth praise You with thanksgiving. #Prayer Click To Tweet

Karen, I really appreciated the reminder that not only should we pray for the big, noticeable things in our lives but also for what may seem like the smaller, less noticeable thing. For though they seem small, each has a mighty power. I was thinking of the mouth for example and how James wrote in 3:6-10 how people can tame every kind of wild animal, but no one can tame the tongue and how we use our tongues to praise our Lord and Father, but then we curse people, whom God made like himself. So even though our tongue is small – it has the power to do harm or do good. With prayer and a focus on our eyes, mouth, tongue and the help of the Spirit may we grow better in our capacity to use them for God’s good purposes and his glory.

Karen says:

So true, Anne. What we often think are small things, like the tongue/mouth, actually is possible to get us into a lot of trouble, the capacity to speak death or life to and over others. Thanks for your insight.

Yvonne Morgan says:

Brilliant. I love the prayers, they are so rich and deep. I reread them several times. I can’t wait for part two. Absolutely beautiful. Thanks for sharing this with us Karen and for helping us with our walk with Christ.

Karen says:

Yvonne, thank you. I think we forget God’s Word holds the answers for many of the battles we face. Praying Scripture is so powerful. May it help us all pray more specifically for ourselves and our loved ones. I’m praying each of these prayers for many days to come.

How wonderful to pray specific prayers! In a rush, I feel there are times when I bulk my prayers into one lump. Thank you for the reminder to be specific in my prayers. I know God is listening either way. 🙂

Karen says:

We can all relate to that, Melissa. May it help us all pray more specifically for ourselves and our loved ones.

LOVE this post! To pray for our minds and bodies this way–fabulous!

Karen says:

Grateful this encouraged you, Nancy. Lord, help us pray specific, powerful prayers. Like prayers taken directly from God’s Word that are powerful when spoken over our lives.

Jann says:

Thank you for this great list. It gives the resources need to strengthen our prayers.

Karen says:

You’re welcome Jann, may we pray more intentional for our mind, eyes, ears, and mouth. So they glorify our heavenly Father and not dishonor Him.

What a simple yet profound idea – to pray for ourselves from head to toe. Truly our fleshly nature is drawn toward sin in so many different ways. This is a powerful and prayerful way to approach the reality of our wandering hearts. Thank you for tackling this in a truthful, yet victorious ways. The prayers of those made righteous in Christ are powerful and effective! Wonderful teaching, dear sister!

Karen says:

Yes, Melissa…that war going on inside us with the members of our flesh that battle with our spirit who wants to follow after the things of the Holy Spirit, while our flesh wants to follow after the things of the world that often lead us down the wrong paths and as you said, sin. Love this, “he prayers of those made righteous in Christ are powerful and effective!” Amen!

Loved praying the Scripture with you today, Karen! What a great idea you’ve come up with here. I’m looking forward to Part 2.
Blessings!

Karen says:

Thanks so much, Martha. You’re a great encourager, friend. I pray we “Diligently listen to the voice of the Lord.” Give ear to his commandments. Keep all his statutes. (See Exodus 15:26 ESV). God bless!

Karen,
I REALLY enjoyed this and felt covered by the Holy Spirit as I read through and prayed the scriptures and prayer over each part. Definitely looking forward to Part 2. This would make a great Devotional lesson for kids as well as adults.
Blessings,
Bev xx

Karen says:

Apppreciate that, Bev. I know the Holy Spirit helps us pray from a deep place. And what better way to do that than with words God inspired for the crucified life in Christ. (Gal. 2:20) God bless!

Barb Ready says:

Lovely reminder. We should be praying these things over ourselves and our families often. Thanks for the verses to speak over us!

Karen says:

Glad this encouraged you, Barb. It really is a powerful thing to pray for these issues we face with members of our bodies…that inner war between the flesh and spirit.

Mandy Farmer says:

This post reminds my of Sharon Jaynes book Praying for Your Husband From Head To Toe. I’ve been using it for years.

Thought a lot about psalm 101:3 this week with all the talk about super bowl half time. Wondering why people thought it would be any different this year. It’s been raunchy for years. We didn’t watch it.

Karen says:

Hi Mandy, I read a devotion years ago about praying for your husband, but I didn’t know Sharon had an entire book with that title. Sounds wonderful! I left the room during the Super Bowl halftime as well, just saw a lot of talk about it on social media the next day which made me glad I didn’t see it.

“Lord, Your Word reminds me how my eyes can cause me to sin. Amen.”

All wonderful, powerful, and needed prayers Ms. Karen. Sometimes, I think on how I must clean what is under the Armor of God so that I do not corrode or weaken ii from the inside out. I think each of these specific prayers; especially when praying God’s word, are designed to do specifically that. God’s blessings ma’am; and thank you for sharing this wisdom with us.

Karen says:

Great insight, J.D. To clean what is under the Armor of God that we are told to put on in Ephesians 6. Certianly couldn’t hurt to have the mind of Christ under the helmet of Salvation, and so on.

“God, I want to be a child who diligently listens to my heavenly Father’s voice. To really hear Your truth. Show me the way by opening my ears to Your voice. Julie says:

Such a great reminder to pray often!

Karen says:

And pray specifically and intentionally, Julie. 🙂

Leaning into my prayer life more than ever right now and I really appreciate these helps.

Karen says:

Lauren, so thankful prayer changes things and people, and changes us. Especially when we pray God’s Word.

Jessica Brodie says:

Praying for the small things is just as important as the big. I imagine to God they are one and the same!

Karen says:

Yes, Jessica. Even what we think on. “Father God, You created my mind, so I submit it to Your care. Amen.”

What a great way to frame the prayers that we need. I’m looking forward to considering the rest of my body, but these first 4 are very relevant and essential. Maybe my mouth is the only one I don’t really struggle with. Oh, how I need to give up and let God work through my head-to-toe parts. And, yes, I will pray about these for my family as well. We all need it. Thank you.

Karen says:

Thanks, Stephen. I believe any ways we can pray for our walks with the Lord, how we interact with others in life, and how we pray for others are always relevant and essential to Christ-followers.

Karen. I am so thrilled to find you have a website! Thank God for Grace & Truth! I love to read one’s thoughts about prayer because I cherish prayer. In fact, I’d be lost without the opportunity to talk with my Savior. Thanks for doing this series. I’m sure you will encourage and enlighten all who read. Have a fantastic weekend! God bless you and yours.

Karen says:

Nice to have you visit, Horace. I love Grace & Truth link up as well. And I also cherish prayer and talking to the heavenly Father, my Savior Jesus, and asking the Holy Spirit to empower me in areas like we cover here. God bless!

This post of item by item reminders and verses given is a great resource. All of us struggle with keeping our minds, eyes, ears, and mouths in alignment with God’s Word, kindness, love, and Jesus’ example and the instruction to walk in his steps. It’s been a particular challenge for us recently with our life changes and my autoimmune disease flaring up as a result. I think that every time my mouth threatens to head off in the wrong direction, I’m going to go hide in the quiet darkness and solitude of a special little corner I have claimed for stepping away before I say something I shouldn’t. Complaining and nitpicking have been challenges lately.

Karen says:

Melinda, I like your key thought “alignment with God’s Word.” And also following Jesus’ example. Those are two things we should strive for on the Christian journey. My mouth has gotten me into hot water more times than I care to admit…or at least certainly didn’t build others up. Sometimes it’s what we say, how we say it, or what we don’t say. They all matter.

Gayl says:

Karen, this is a good reminder to pray specifically for areas we might not always think about. I pray generally that I will honor Him with my life but not always specifically for my mind, etc. So thank you for sharing this. Blessings to you! I’m your neighbor at #Grace&Truth.

Karen says:

Hey Gayl, thanks for visiting neighbor and for adding to our conversation here. I agree, sometimes I pray too general as well. Over the last 4-5 years, the Lord has really done a work in me about prayer and praying Scripture.

This was perfect timing, Karen. I’m in prayer today for a friend’s son, so I used these prayers for him right now. Thank you for inviting us into these prayers!

Karen says:

Awesome, Emily. So glad the timing was perfect to pray specifically over your friend’s son. My list certainly isn’t exhaustive even with Part 2. Any time we know a specific need in us or someone else, we can look up Bible verses that cover those issues and pray them.

Mary Geisen says:

I love this post. Praying for our bodies is a reminder for me that we are influenced through all parts of our bodies.

Karen says:

Thanks, Mary. Yes, while we still live in this flesh suit, we are going to have struggles. I hope this post encourages to be more intentional to pray over members of our bodies so they bring glory to the One who Created them.

Love, love, love this post. Looking forward to applying these prayers and to Part II!

Karen says:

Thanks so much, Ava.

Lord, I pray the words of my mouth are acceptable to You and I keep my lips from lies. Set a guard over my mouth so that instead of foolish words, they give grace and build others up. Let my mouth praise You with thanksgiving. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Linda Stoll says:

Reading the Scriptures, praying the Scriptures, allowing all those we memorized along the way to come to mind … especially during the night when sleep eludes.

Amen, Karen …

Karen says:

Linda, this practice of praying Scripture from head to toe certainly helps us look up specific Bible verses and memorize…become more familiar with God’s Word.

Erin Gram says:

Prayer + Scriptures = Power. I love these specific prayers to cover our lives and those of our family. Using the bible as a prayer book is my favorite way to pray! Thank you for these beautiful, powerful reminders!!

Karen says:

Amen, Erin! Thank you, if we’ve ever wondered if we can pray for ourselves and our loved ones from head to toe, now we know. Scripture has many of the answers for the battles we face!

Lyndsie Suttle says:

One thing I’ve been focusing on this year is praying more intentional prayers. I love the idea of praying head to toe! Psalm 19:14 is one of my favorite verses, and one I pray often for myself. I need to incorporate these others, too. Thanks for this list!

Karen says:

Thank you, Lyndsie. I love that scripture too. “Lord, I pray the words of my mouth are acceptable to You and I keep my lips from lies. Set a guard over my mouth so that instead of foolish words, they give grace and build others up. Let my mouth praise You with thanksgiving. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Laurie says:

Thank you for the encouragement, Karen. The list of specific prayers is so useful. I am sometimes at a loss for words. These are wonderful suggestions to get the conversation with God started!

Karen says:

Hey Laurie, I think we forget how powerful Scripture is and how often members of our bodies like eyes, mouth, etc are mentioned in the Bible.

[…] 8 Powerful Head-to-toe Prayers in the Bible:  Part 1 by Karen Friday […]

Wow, what a great list! I never considered this before, that God’s Word speaks to every part of us.

Karen says:

Thanks, Barbara. The issues we face as believers from head to toe are covered in the Bible. I’ve always found praying Scripture so powerful.

I’ve been learning the power of praying more specifically and I love this idea of praying over different parts of your body. After dealing with a moody teenager this weekend, my mouth in particular could benefit from a little repentance! Thanks for sharing, Karen.

Karen says:

Glad this encouraged you, Valerie. And, yes, “moody teenager” calls for some reinforcement from Scripture and prayer. 🙂

Hello Karen, I found this article very interesting and I love the scriptures shared and your prayers! Keep on keeping on sharing my friend!

Karen says:

Thank you, Winston. It’s really revolutionized the way I pray over myself and my family and friends. It’s so intentional, specific, and includes God’s Word which we know always accomplishes the purpose He intended. Appreciate your comment. God bless.
