Look Up When the World Distracts You

Look Up When the World Distracts You

I know you’ll enjoy this guest post on how and why to look up by my blogger and author friend, Kelly Balarie. And read to the end to see how to enter a giveway for her latest book.

By Kelly Balarie

I had no idea what was above me.

Because I was focused on the stop sign to the right of me, or the people crossing the street, or changing the radio station in the car that day…I was not caught up in what was above me.

But, suddenly—and I can’t say why—I looked up.

Look Up

There I saw a brilliant display of nature. The sky was gorgeous. It was radiant, blue, red and purple hues strewn all over the sky.

It seemed to convey the brilliance, the majesty and the beauty of God all at once.

Yet, I would have missed it if I had kept my eyes on the million little things happening in front of me. And I would have missed it if distraction had a greater hold on me than my desire to look up.

I would have missed it if I wasn’t aware that there is usually more than meets the eye.

Yet, I looked up. Scripture tells us to look up.

Earthly Focused

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. (Colossians 3:2)

Lately, my focus looks earthly focused. I see politics. I see news articles. And I see what is not happening in my world. Also, I see issues with people. I see problems.

Yet, essentially, God tells me—Kelly, do not set your mind on all that—look up!

Look Up When the World Distracts You

I love how Isaiah 40:26 NIV says it…”Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.” (emphasis added)

When We Look Up

When we look up, we keep discouragement at bay by not focusing on what’s raging all around.

Because when we see higher, we get a higher perspective.

Still further, when we look at what God has created, we remember He is Creator.

We remember He can create a new thing at any time and at any moment.

When we look up, we keep discouragement at bay by not focusing on what's raging all around. Because when we see higher, we get a higher perspective. ~ Kelly Balarie #Focus #bookgiveaway Click To Tweet

This is rest.

Are you looking up—remembering God’s faithfulness? Giving thanks for what He is doing in your life today? Meditating on His Word? Singing of His goodness?

Or, are you stuck in the muck of a million little distractions that are demanding your attention?

God is higher and stronger than everything and anything you may face today. Look up!

Rest Now

About Kelly’s new book.

“Rest Now: 7 Ways To Say No, Set Boundaries and Seize Joy”

If you feel overwhelmed, you’re not alone. Three out of five people admit to doing more than they can manage. Thinking God requires this, we say, “I must be everything to everyone.”

Then we struggle and feel selfish and guilty when we say no, grow weary, or snap at someone out of sheer exhaustion.

Is this what God desires? Somewhere along the line of being a good Christian, wife, daughter, or friend we lose sight of who we are in Christ. We put our performance above God and who he says we are. But what if we chose a more soul-full way?

Rest Now offers permission to breathe. It exposes the lies that distract, tire, and bully us, so we don’t strive for rest but love from it, like Jesus did.

Learn how to

create boundaries that allow you to overflow with love
– say no so you don’t hate yourself later
ditch passive-aggressive behaviors in favor of healthy conversations
– embrace permission-giving thoughts to create mental space for God

Yvonne Morgan says:

Thank you for the wonderful encouragement in this post. Very timely too, with all that is happening in our lives. I am tired at times but I will keep looking up to find my strength. Thanks

Karen says:

Yvonne, I like how you said, “I am tired at times but I will keep looking up to find my strength.” Kelly’s book, “Rest Now” offers great antidotes for that.

Kelly is an amazing woman. I appreciate her honesty and willingness to help others.

Karen says:

Thank you, Melissa. She is a woman of God.

Oh, yes! Let us look up and keep our eyes on Jesus.
Blessings, Karen and Kelly!

Karen says:

Lord, help us say “yes” to these questions: Are you “looking up—remembering God’s faithfulness? Giving thanks for what He is doing in your life today? Meditating on His Word? Singing of His goodness?

Cathy Baker says:

Hi, Kelly! It’s nice “meeting” you here. We could all use a cheerleader for our faith and you’re obviously doing a great job!

Karen says:

Cathy, Kelly is just that, cheerleader for Jesus. Don’t you love meeting other Jesus girls?! And you’re included in that my friend.

Wonderful, encouraging post. I’ll always remember something my Dad used to say, “Don’t get so heavenly minded that you become no earthly good.” I’ve come to understand how important it is to maintain balance between our spiritual life and human life. We must be heavenly-focused so we might be filled to overflowing; and then we must focus outwardly to others so what spills over pours into them. It was great to meet and learn a bit about Ms. Kelly. Thank you for sharing this sweet soul with us Ms. Karen.

Karen says:

J.D., that balance between an earthly life and spiritual life is so strategic and intentional on our part. I know for me, setting my mind on things above helps my earthly perspective. God bless!

Donna says:

Kelly, I love this reminder to “look up”! So often I AM distracted by everything going on around me and subsequently missing more important things! Isaiah 40:26 is an incredible encouragement to me! Thank you!!

Karen says:

Thanks for adding your thought, Donna. Isn’t it so easy to be distracted by what’s happening around us and in front of us instead of looking up? I also felt heart encouragement from Isaiah 40:26.

Great encouragement for today! It’s easy to be overwhelmed by all of life’s challenges right now, from election, to health issues, to pandemic, to family matters. Looking up, keeping our eyes on Jesus, helps to lighten our load and to transfer the weight of all of this onto the shoulders actually made to carry it!

Karen says:

Oh, how you speak truth, Melinda. We were not created to bear this kind of stuff…to carry these heavy burdens of the world. But Jesus has the robust and strong shoulders we need.

Mandy Farmer says:

I was just reading Colossians 3:2 today and was encouraged to remember to just “look up”.
God bless. I pray your book will do well and encourage many.

Karen says:

Thanks for your thoughts on Kelly’s article, Mandy. The book is fabulous!

Jessica Brodie says:

Ahhh yes — so good! LOOK UP. It brings everything into perspective, doesn’t it?

Karen says:

It sure does, Jessica. I pray to not become stuck in those millions of little distractions but keep looking up!

This reminds me of that song that Lauren Daigle sings, “Look Up Child.” Love the concept… so good!

Karen says:

Lisa, I’d forgotten about that particular song. Yes! Our heavenly Father desires we look up to Him.

Encouragement for the soul. We need the perspective that looking up brings.

Karen says:

True, Theresa. I like how Kelly said, “God is higher and stronger than everything and anything you may face today. Look up!”

Karen says:

Thanks for adding to our conversation, Kristi Ann! Amen! Blessings, sister.

Yes – look up!
The world tells us to look inward for encouragement and hope, but we know better. The bigger question is not whether we agree with this, but will we DO it?

Karen says:

Ava, looking up instead of inward is more than agreeing or beliving it but actually following through in action. Thanks for your insight.

A much needed message at this very moment! Thank you, Karen and Kelly! Slowly but surely I have been learning to peel off my sticky fingers from my agenda and release my days to the LORD. He can accomplish much more than me and I am filled first with His love and joy if I begin from a place of resting in Christ. May God add His blessings to all you are doing!

Karen says:

Love this, Melissa: “He can accomplish much more than me and I am filled first with His love and joy if I begin from a place of resting in Christ.” That’s good. Blessings!

It is all too easy to get focused on the things of this world but only by focusing on God will we have an eternal perspective. Thanks for sharing.

Karen says:

Well said, Donna, it’s either an earthly perspective or eternal, we get to choose!

So many times “looking up” changes my entire perspective, if only, just as you said, I actually hear Him, listen, and do it. I’ve heard wonderful things about your book, Kelly. Congratulations on your hard work and accomplishments!

Karen says:

Hey Valerie, looking up instead of around makes a world of difference. Thanks for commenting.

June Foster says:

Karen, thanks so much for this post. Kelly is indeed a gifted writer. I surely need this reminder – to look up.

Karen says:

Glad this inspired and encouraged you, June. Keep looking up!

Thank you Karen for sharing this post by Kelly Balarie. We do live in a world where there is so much clamouring for out attention. So much more than the here and now. Thank you so much for the reminder.

Karen says:

You’re welcome, Carl. It’s a powerful message on focusing where we find true rest. Keep looking up!

Anita Ojeda says:

I’ve learned a lot about the importance of setting boundaries in the last 20 years (hey, I’m a slow learner 😉 ). This book looks like a great resource!

Karen says:

You and me both, Anita. This book is a gem for sure. Setting boundaries was one of my favorite sections of the book. 🙂

Sharon Hazel says:

A timely reminder to keep our focus on God, and His perspective – thanks for sharing an interesting book review!

Karen,
Thanks for sharing this overview of Kelly’s book. I truly need to learn more about setting boundaries when it comes to safeguarding my rest. I definitely need a new MO as to how I operate. I’m good at looking up but not so great about lying down…
Blessings,
Bev xx

mariel says:

love this! the perspective to look up changes everything!! Thank you for these great reviews!

Karen says:

You’re welcome, Mariel. As a reader of Kelly’s book, it made sense to share a guest post by her and highlight “Rest Now” for the amazing message it carries.

Karen, I really enjoyed this book and it’s fun to see a post from Kelly on your beautiful website!

Karen says:

Appreciate you commenting and leaving your thoughts on Kelly’s book, Ginger. It’s a great read chalked full of new ways to rest.

Karen, what a great post. As I’ve pondered rest this month, Kelly’s words resonate with me. We do need to put boundaries around our time and give ourselves permission to say no so we can simply BREATHE. We’re actually obeying God when we rest. So, that’s a good thing. 🙂

Thanks for sharing this post. It’s giving me lots to think about.

Karen says:

Hey Jeanne, yes, I read your articles on rest, such fresh insight that I actually thought of your words when posting Kelly’s article. And I like how you said, “We’re actually obeying God when we rest. So, that’s a good thing.”

Liz says:

It’s true! When I focus on the Lord, He makes my paths straight. Love your heart for Him and the way you point others to Jesus.❤️

Karen says:

Thanks, Liz. I desire to make Jesus known. May we keep looking up!

Gina Upton says:

It’s not lost on me that I stumbled across this article today. Struggling to find peace today & needed the reminder to look up & put my focus on the one who is always faithful & gives peace that is beyond all understanding.

Karen says:

Gina, I love it when the Lord does that! Divine appointments! Keep looking up!
