The World’s Greatest Need Is Jesus

If the world needs anything right now, it’s Jesus. Because the world’s greatest need always has been and always will be Jesus Christ.

Have you noticed the world seems to spiral out of control toward chaos and unrest more than ever?

We live in a world filled with evil, suffering, division, hatred, confusion, and troubled hearts.

And in the middle of it all, we’re constantly being told what we need to make things better.

More money. More power. And more control. Also, more pleasure. Don’t forget about more possessions and more recognition.

But the enemy has been deceiving humanity about our deepest needs since the beginning. And if we’re not careful, even as Christians, we can believe the same lies.

The truth is, what the world needs most isn’t something we can buy, achieve, possess, or experience.

The world needs Jesus.

And so do we.

Even believers must continually rein ourselves in from the things the world offers and remind ourselves of what is truly satisfying. How much more do those who don’t know Christ struggle to recognize their deepest need?

Let’s consider a few of the ways we can be deceived into believing we need something other than Jesus.

World’s Greatest Need: More Money?

Money itself isn’t evil. Scripture warns us about the love of money and what happens when it becomes the thing we pursue above God.

“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” 1 Timothy 6:10 (NIV)

“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.” 1 Timothy 6:6–7 (NIV)

What a countercultural message. The world tells us that more is better. God tells us that godliness with contentment is great gain.

Paul goes on to tell Timothy to flee the love of money and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness (1 Timothy 6:11).

We need more of Jesus.

We Want Power, Control, and Recognition

We see an unhealthy hunger for power, control, and recognition everywhere. In politics. Government. Corporate America. Small businesses. Families. Hollywood. Social media.

And perhaps if we’re honest, we see traces of that hunger in ourselves. We want to be noticed, in control, things done our way, and influence.

But God created us to depend upon His power and submit to His authority and sovereignty. If we desire influence, may it be to influence others for Jesus.

The enemy’s desire for exaltation and independence stands in stark contrast to the humility God calls us to.

“It is he who made the earth by his power.” Jeremiah 10:12 (ESV)

Jesus “is the radiance of the glory of God” (Hebrews 1:3, ESV).

The glory belongs to Him—not us.

We don’t need more control. But we need to trust the One who is already in control.

And we don’t need more recognition. But we need to know and make Jesus known—make much of Jesus.

World’s Greatest Need: Fleshly Desires and Passions?

The world continually tells us to follow our desires.

Do you want it? Then pursue it. If it makes you happy, it must be right.

But Scripture tells us something very different.

“For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.” 1 John 2:16 (NIV)

Notice how these three categories mirror the temptation and fall of Adam and Eve in Genesis 3.

The forbidden fruit was good for food, a delight to the eyes, and something desired to make one wise (Genesis 3:6).

And we continue to wrestle with these same temptations today. Like when we turn to food, alcohol, sexual immorality, shopping, entertainment, screens, success, relationships, or any number of other things to soothe our hearts and satisfy our longings.

But God created us to desire Him.

You need Jesus. I need Jesus. The lost need Jesus. We all need Jesus. Share on X

We Want What Others Possess

Then there’s comparison. Maybe a friend has a beautiful home. Or a neighbor purchases a new vehicle.

And suddenly, we’re dissatisfied. So we envy, compare, and even grumble.

But comparison blinds us to God’s goodness in our own lives.

The enemy simply convinces us that someone else’s life is better.

Yet when we continually look sideways at what others possess, we can lose sight of the One who possesses everything.

Jesus is enough. Our identity in Christ is enough. God’s provision is enough.

World’s Greatest Need: Our Real Need

So what does the world really need? Jesus.

And God’s people need Jesus, too. Not just when we first believe. And not just when life falls apart.

We need Jesus more and more every day. Because we need His peace for our troubled hearts. His comfort in our suffering. And His love when hatred surrounds us.

When we’re confused, we need Jesus. When we’re weak, we need Jesus.

The lost need Jesus. Their greatest need is salvation through Jesus Christ.

Are we communicating that message—not merely with our words, but with our lives? When people look at us, do they see people desperately pursuing what the world offers? Or do they see people who have found something the world cannot give?

Are we quick to point fellow believers toward more money, more success, more entertainment, and more self-help? Or are we pointing them toward more of Jesus and more of the Word of God?

And when the world is hurting, confused, angry, and searching for answers, are we willing to lovingly tell them the truth?

You need Jesus.

I need Jesus.

We all need Jesus.
