Waiting on Mom to Go Home to Jesus: Eternal Hope

Waiting on Mom to Go Home to Jesus: Eternal Hope

Double bottles, double diapers, double everything, and double trouble.

This is how my Mom, a twin herself, describes her life when my twin sister Sharon and I were born. As infants and toddlers, we were a handful to say the least.

I even wrote and spoke about her experience as a mom of twins in speech classes and oratorical contests. And also in published devotionals.

While I enjoyed growing up with a twin sister,—a God-made bestie—I never birthed twins myself. Never a mom of twins.

Still, we’ve heard the crazy stories of putting diapers in the toilet, running opposite directions in the grocery store, baking mud pies in our Easy Bake Oven, and having Chicken Pox and all the sicknesses at the same time.

Some stories we remember. And we cherish many precious memories growing up with each other and our younger sister, Wendi, and life with our Mom.

But as I type these words, I sit in my Mom’s hospital room after she suffered a massive stroke. No warning signs or symptoms beforehand. The neurosurgeon explained to our family how the CT Scan showed a large brain bleed.

Sadly, she has been unresponsive and surgery won’t help her. At 86, she won’t recover and has been placed on comfort care while they check on hospice. Doctors say she has anywhere from a few days to maybe a week.

And it somehow seems surreal. Then reality hits. Same thoughts and emotions during my husband’s heart journey nearly a year ago.

Waiting on Mom to go home to Jesus.

Oh, we’ve cried, held her hand, talked to her, swabbed her mouth with sponges, covered up her trembling body, and prayed over her.

My Mom’s twin sister came to see her. Our hearts broke for her sister in tears and she hoped Mom knew she was hear to say goodbye.

Ultimately, we find comfort that she will be in the arms of Jesus when she passes. Our heavenly Father knows when she’s coming to her eternal home. The Lord holds time in His hands.

The Bible encourages us in difficult times like this. And Scripture gives us hope when our loved one passes away or we wait for the Lord to call them home.

Laying Our Beautiful Mom in His loving Arms

“For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know!I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far.” Philippians 1:21-23 (NIV)

“Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.” 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 (NIV)

“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?’” John 11:25-26 (NIV)

“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.” Philippians 3:20-21 (NIV)

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Revelation 21:4 (NIV)

So we wait and trust the Lord and lay our beautiful Mom in His loving arms. Please pray for our family.

My heart is with you as you prepare to say goodbye to your precious Mom. There are no easy words for a moment like this, especially when someone you have loved for 86 years of her life is nearing the end of her earthly journey.
I pray you will feel God’s presence surrounding you in these tender hours and that He will give you strength for each moment, peace when your heart feels overwhelmed, and comfort in knowing how deeply she is loved.
Hold her hand, speak softly to her, tell her the things your heart needs to say. Even when words may no longer be possible, love has a way of being understood.
May you find comfort in knowing that hospice is there to help make these final moments peaceful and gentle. And when the time comes to let her go, may you feel the assurance that you are not losing the love you shared, you are carrying it with you.
Praying for you, your Mom, and your family. May God hold you especially close during this sacred and difficult time. ❤️
