Believing God Works All Things for Our Good

Believing God Works All Things for Our Good

We believe God works all things for our good, until we don’t.

Because those “until we don’t” reasons include things like tragedy, sickness, loss, unimaginable grief, fizzled dreams, and so on.

And let’s get really honest here. Life happens and life is full of ups and downs.

So it’s easy to listen to the enemy’s lies during the down-times. Satan’s lies claim God doesn’t have our good in mind. Or else He would not have let this thing happen to us.

But even when I’m at the end of my rope, I know God is good, does good, and works behind the scenes for my good. I may not understand the whys or what He is doing, but it doesn’t change who God is or His good nature.

Our circumstances never change God’s goodness.

So let’s remind our hearts of the Bible verse containing this promise.

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28 (NIV)

Notice the promise is not that all things are good, but all the things work toward our good.

God Works All Things: The Promise of Good

God has promised good to us.

The Lord has plans for our good, now and in our future.

Since the beginning of time, God weaved His goodness throughout the chapters of His-story. It started with creation when He saw everything He made was good.

We see God’s goodness when He rescued His people. Goodness revealed in Bethlehem’s stable and narrated in Jesus’ ministry. Goodness told at the foot of a bloody cross and reported as Victor in an empty tomb.

Also, we see His goodness in our lives. We are living testimonies to God’s goodness. God is good and does good. (Psalm 119:68)

Even when I'm at the end of my rope, I know God is good, does good, and works behind the scenes for my good. I may not understand the whys or what He is doing, but it doesn’t change who God is or His good nature.  Click To Tweet

God Works All Things: Those Who Love Him

Believing God Works All Things for Our Good

Last week we discussed how an undivided heart for God is to love Him with all our heart, soul, and might. (Deuteronomy 6:5)

Do I love God like this?

I pray to reciprocate God’s great love for me. Because if we love God with all of who we are, believing He is working things toward our good comes easier.

I see God’s wonderful goodness written on the pages of my life. It started in my beginning—in the womb where He formed me.

When God knit you in the womb, He began writing your story. He’s still writing the chapters of your story as part of His bigger story. But don’t worry about the beginning, middle, or ending because His love and goodness is written on every page.

God is a good Father. So I am confident goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life. (Psalm 23:6)

Good: Called According to God’s Purpose

When we look at the entirety of Romans 8, we find confirmation of God working for our good. And it’s all connected to His calling and purpose on our lives.

The Spirit of Life sets us free from sin, the law, and the flesh. (Romans 8:1-11)

Adopted as sons and daughters by Abba Father and heirs with Christ. (Romans 8:12-17)

Our present sufferings don’t compare to the future glory revealed in us. And the Spirit helps us in our weakness. Who God calls, He also justifies and will glorify. (Romans 8:18-30)

God is for us (who can be against us), and makes us more than conquerors. Also, He loves us with a love that life, death, angels, powers, creation—nothing can separate us from. (Romans 8:31-39)

I have learned through the years that God has a purpose in every moment. I may not understand or know His plan, but I find comfort in knowing He is with us always. 🙂 Have a blessed day!

Karen says:

Melissa, that is a beautiful way to say it. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28 (NIV)

Amy Temple says:

I have been a subscriber for a couple years now and Karen, I have got to say you – without a doubt – have a gift for inspiring others through your gift of writing.

It has brought me encouragement during my times of difficulty.

Thank you so much, Karen. May God continue to bless you and your lovely family in all you do.

By the way, I really enjoy your pictures too ❤❤😊

Karen says:

AW, this is so encouraging and kind of you to say, Amy. Glory to the Lord for His callings on our lives and how He wants us to build up and encourage the body of Christ. I’m grateful the Lord has used my words to speak to your heart. Many blessings to you and your family.

When God knit you in the womb, He began writing your story. He’s still writing the chapters of your story as part of His bigger story. But don’t worry about the beginning, middle, or ending because His love and goodness is written on every page.

I choose each day to believe in and trust God’s goodness and mercy. He is working all things for our good through His grace. We can take that to the bank!
Blessings, Karen!

Karen says:

We can take God’s Word as truth, Martha! The promise is not that all things are good, but all the things work toward our good. God bless!

J.D. Wininger says:

So true Ms. Karen. It’s when we finally come to truly believe that God ALWAYS has our best in mind, we can accept that His best for us does not have to align with what we think, or what this world tells us, is the best for us. In trusting Him in all things, we find the peace, joy, and rest we need.

Karen says:

That is key–knowing our heavenly Father has our best interest in mind and wants what’s good for us and our heart. God is a good Father. So I am confident goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life. (Psalm 23:6)

Yvonne Morgan says:

Wonderful message. Romans 8:28 is my life verse so I can really relate. I trust good to make everything work out. Thanks Karen

Karen says:

A wonderful life verse, Yvonne. We can trust God’s goodness no matter our circumstances.

Jessica Brodie says:

I LOVE this, and this is actually the topic of my own blog coming up the week after next. Clearly God is wanting you and me to testify about this important truth! ALL WILL BE RIGHT and God’s way will prevail. Thank you for your writing excellence and your truth-telling!

Karen says:

Hey Jessica, looking forward to reading your article on this topic. I like how you said, “ALL WILL BE RIGHT and God’s way will prevail.” Yes and Amen!

This is so encouraging, Karen. I’ve been focusing in on this same topic, loving God with intensity as He loves me. During all the recent trials, I have striven to remember His love and superintendent care of all that touches my life. God is good, and God loves me. During those trials, He also gave me an enormous blessing. I’m still trying to absorb the kindness and the outcome!

The more I study and write about Him, the more I fall even deeper in love with Him. That is one reason why I write about Him. It causes me to uncover even more reasons to love Him. He has a personal love for us. He formed us in our mothers’ wombs. He has drawn us to Himself with the power of His Spirit, to believe in Him, and to be renewed, forgiven, and born again into His kingdom, children of God.

Karen says:

A thousand Hallelujahs, Melinda. I’m so glad you write for the Lord, keep falling more in love with Him, and know how much He loves you. He’s a good, good Father. God is for us (who can be against us), and makes us more than conquerors. Also, He loves us with a love that life, death, angels, powers, creation—nothing can separate us from.

This is one of my favorite verses, Karen thought I try to remember that the “good” may not be exactly what we think it is. But it always includes the next verse “For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son …” He uses the tests and trials of our lives to help us grow more like His Son.

Karen says:

Donna, we need to remind our hearts about the following verse in the chapter. Our present sufferings don’t compare to the future glory revealed in us. And the Spirit helps us in our weakness. Who God calls, He also justifies and will glorify.

Joanne Viola says:

God works everything for our good, yes, even through circumstances we may not view as good. He is working His purposes in and through our lives, while at the same time, transforming our lives to be more like His Son. When we look back, we will see it was all for our good. In this we can trust and have hope. Blessings!

Karen says:

It’s hard to understand in the moment, but spiritual hindsight is often 20/20 as well. God is working behind the scenes on our behalf even when we don’t know what He’s doing or see the immediate results. God bless!
