Blessings in the Shadow of the Almighty’s Wings

Blessings in the Shadow of the Almighty’s Wings

She flew away as her wings took flight when I opened our front door.

Inside the edge of my wreath, I found the beginnings of her nest.

I realized our constant door activity was a risk to any eggs she’d lay.

So I acted quickly in taking my wreath down to force this mama bird to build her home elsewhere.

A few days later, high on the River Birch branch inside our courtyard, I spotted a newly built nest. I imagined her nesting, then caring for her babies through feeding and protecting them from harm—seasonal storms and predators.

And keeping them under her wings.

As God’s children, we need a safe shelter. Because life’s storms and a predator (Satan) often put us in danger.

Or, maybe we wonder how to rest in the Lord and the best time to take flight and soar.

We are given many assurances about abiding under God’s wings.

  • God covers us with His feathers.
  • The Father hides us in the shadow of His wings.
  • His faithful promises are our strong shelter.

Look at Jesus’s words in Matthew 23.

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!” (Verses 37, ESV)

Our redeemer wants to gather us under His wings—if we are willing. Then these blessings follow.

Refuge under His Wings

Like the hen gathers her brood to protect them from harm, the Lord’s wings provide protection and security during stormy seasons and the enemy’s harmful intent.

Psalm 91 describes our refuge.

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’” (Verses 1-2, ESV)

Blessings in the Shadow of the Almighty’s Wings

“He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.” (Verse 4, ESV)

My research uncovered an astounding and comforting discovery.

Pinions make up the outer part of a bird’s wing, including the flight feathers (Google). Birds are unable to take flight while covering their babies. It simply is impossible.

Dark and turbulent storms often hit close to home in our lives. We lose a loved one or a job, illness strikes, our child turns wayward, our marriage is in trouble, or our dreams go unmet.

Yet, the Lord never leaves us, never flies off during threatening times. And He never forsakes us. We remain secure under His wings.

David knew this security in Psalm 57.

“Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by.” (Verse 1, ESV)

David prayed as he hid in a cave, fleeing from Saul who wanted to kill him. The cave wasn’t his refuge, but the shadow of the Almighty’s wings.

Rest in His Care

We often fail to take a break from the busyness that leads to burnout, and this depletes our soul of joy. Our weary bodies and hearts, our what-if’s, and our anxious thoughts all contribute to this breaking point.

“For you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.” (Psalm 63:7, ESV)

To rest is an intentional position of the heart. Just like the sound of morning birds chirping in the morning sun, our joy is found in the Son.

The end result of resting under His wings? Joy!

Renewal from His Shelter

Merriam-Webster defines renew as, “to make (something) new, fresh, or strong again.”

The heavenly Father restores us and makes us strong. And after each renewing under His wings, we are ready to take flight and soar—until the next renewing season.

“But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles.” (Isaiah 40:31a, ESV

Let’s resolve to remain under the Almighty’s wings for refuge, rest, and renewal.

I’m nestled there now. Are you?

Susan Shipe says:

Had to have been a Robin? I have a friend whose front door wreath always houses a nest!!!

Karen says:

It was a Robin. We also see a lot of blue birds and red birds which I think are Cardinals in our courtyard area and around our home. We’ve also had full nests in our door wreath. Sadly, one egg was lost as it dropped to the ground. So it’s why I acted quickly this time. And we actually had a Robin fly inside our home who was sitting on the wreath when we opened the door. Many stories.

Abiding beneath the strong, protective wings of our God . . . Yes, we can always find rest and refuge in Him.
Blessings, Karen!

Karen says:

“He will cover Martha with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.” (Psalm 91:4, ESV), changes mine.

J.D. Wininger says:

Such a blessing! I could feel the gentleness of your soul in your words ma’am. Thank you so much for this encouraging message.

Karen says:

Thank you, J.D. “He will cover J.D. with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.” (Psalm 91:4, ESV), changes mine.

Beautiful reminders of the gentle care of the Lord, where we can shelter under his wings. Those robin’s nests are great schools. The tender care of the parent birds flying back and forth, feeding the wide open baby mouths. The sheltering of the tiny and fragile baby birds under the pinions of their wings during the storms. It’s a blessing for us to be a baby birds under the pinions of the feathers of the Lord God Almighty. Thank you for this reminder.

Karen says:

It is a blessing when we think about the Lord’s care and protection and provision in the shadow of His wings. So thankful during life’s storms, the Lord never leaves us, never flies off during threatening times. And He never forsakes us. We remain secure under His wings.

Donna says:

Great post, Karen, I love object lessons, especially about nature. My daughter-in-law has a problem with a sparrow nesting in her front door wreath every spring! I am grateful for the reminder of God’s protection over me in every circumstance!

Karen says:

Donna, I guess some birds are just drawn to what looks like the perfect spot for nesting! “For you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.” (Psalm 63:7, ESV)

Paula Short says:

Karen this is so beautiful. And, thank you for this great lesson. Blessings.

Karen says:

Paula, thank you, appreciate you stopping by and taking time to comment. The heavenly Father restores us and makes us strong. And after each renewing under His wings, we are ready to take flight and soar—until the next renewing season.

A beautiful message. I am reminded that just like birds, we need to find shelter from the storms. Our shelter and protection are found in Him. Amen.

Karen says:

Yes, Melissa. “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles.” (Isaiah 40:31a, ESV)

Maree Dee says:

Karen, I love lessons with a story I can remember. Thank you for sharing with Grace & Truth Link-Up and reminding us God’s got us under His wing. Maree

Karen says:

I do too, Maree. Glad the Lord gave me this object lesson first hand since I’ve always loved Psalm 91. And finding the other scriptures and research on pinions brought it all together in my heart!

Such a wonderful story to show his love. How great that you were so kind to a wild animal mama just trying to make a home for her babies!

Karen says:

Nancy, I had been in this position before with a nest that already had eggs in it. One dropped to the ground and was lost in that instant. So I knew to act and force the mama bird this time to nest elsewhere. “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles.” (Isaiah 40:31a, ESV)

This is exactly what I need to focus on today. Thank you.

Karen says:

Wonderful, Lauren! Let’s resolve to remain under the Almighty’s wings for refuge, rest, and renewal.

Yvonne Morgan says:

So much comfort in your words today, thank you. They felt like a balm to my weary soul. I will rest under His almighty wings today. Thanks Karen

Karen says:

Yes, Yvonne! Let’s stay nestled there! “He will cover Yvonne with his pinions, and under his wings she will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.” (Psalm 91:4, ESV, changes mine)

Carlie says:

Thanks, Karen! ‘Refuge, rest, and renewal’ – sounds like just what I need. Isn’t God absolutely loving and good to offer His wayward children such precious gifts? May we continually take Him up on His offer.

Karen says:

He is a good, good Father, Carile. He takes great care and watches over us!

Sharon Hazel says:

Rest and renewal – we all need it! Thank you for the blessing of this post this morning.

Karen says:

Thanks for stopping by, Sharon. Let’s resolve to remain under the Almighty’s wings for refuge, rest, and renewal.

I’m nestled there now. Are you?

Such a powerful reminder to rest in Him. Not in me. Not in what I get done. Not in my own ideas. But to rest fully in Him.

Karen says:

Yes, Rebecca, rest fully in Him. “For you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.” (Psalm 63:7, ESV)

We’ve had that experience with birds trying to build nests in our wreaths. Thankfully, God’s resting place is always secure. These verses and truths are comforting.

Karen says:

I love how you note, God’s resting place is secure! Hallelujah!

Joanne Viola says:

Karen, this is such a beautiful post – both encouraging and comforting. This >> “Let’s resolve to remain under the Almighty’s wings for refuge, rest, and renewal.” Amen! There’s no better place to be for it is there I find my peace. Blessings!

I love this Psalm and the images of God’s protective, loving care! I cannot tell you how many times I have read this Psalm to quiet my spirit and calm my heart. Thank you for this beautiful teaching!

Karen says:

Hey Melissa, I’ve always loved Psalm 91, prayed it many times over friends and myself. “He will cover Melissa with his pinions, and under his wings she will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.” (Psalm 91:4, ESV, changes mine)
