Freedom Worth Celebrating: America And Jesus

As America celebrates 250 years of independence, I’m grateful for the freedoms we enjoy as a nation. But I’m even more thankful for the day Christ set me free and gave me new life. A freedom worth celebrating.
That’s a freedom no government can grant and no circumstance can take away.
We celebrate Independence Day because remembering shapes our gratitude. In the same way, Scripture repeatedly calls God’s people to remember His faithfulness and deliverance.
Do we intentionally remember our own “day of deliverance” in Christ? The day we came to know Him as Savior and Lord.
My day of deliverance happened one night at a church revival when I was sixteen.
So what are our many piritual freedoms?

Jesus frees us from spiritual captivity. “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.” Isaiah 61:1 (NIV)
Real freedom comes when the Son sets us free. “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36 (ESV)
True freedom means nothing masters us. (see 1 Corinthians 6:12)
Seeking God’s precepts helps us walk in freedom. “I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your precepts.” Psalm 119:45 (NIV)
Freedom Always Has a Cost
America’s liberty came at the cost of sacrifice. Our spiritual freedom came at an even greater cost—the cross. Grace is free to us because it was costly to Jesus. Jesus’ blood spilled on Calvary’s cross to set real freedom in motion. But it never stopped at the cross. Jesus rose from the dead securing our spiritual freedom for all time.

“…you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.” 1 Peter 1:18-19 (ESV)
Christ sets us free from the power of sin. “We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin.” Romans 6:6-7 (ESV)
To live free as servants of God. “Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.” 1 Peter 2:16 (ESV)
Free from slavery to the flesh. “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1 (ESV)
Are we living like someone who is set free?

A person can live in a free nation and still be spiritually captive. In the same way, believers throughout history have experienced deep spiritual freedom even while imprisoned.
Circumstances don’t determine ultimate freedom—Christ does.
Called to freedom to love and serve. “For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love, serve one another.” Galatians 5:13 (NASB)
Freedom Maintained in Truth
Freedom in the Spirit. “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” 2 Corinthians 3:17 (ESV)
Free from death. “With eager hope, the creation looks forward to the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay.” Romans 8:20b-21 (NLT)
Truth brings freedom. “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32b (ESV)
Freedom in doing God’s perfect law. “But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.” James 1:25 (NIV)
Let’s Celebrate Liberty
- Thank God for the blessings and opportunities of living in a free nation.
- Thank Him even more for the eternal freedom found through Jesus.
- Pray for your country.
- Share your testimony.
- Live in a way that reflects the freedom you’ve received.

Fireworks fade. And flags are folded away.
But the freedom Christ purchased on the cross is worth celebrating every day of the year.
As we celebrate America’s birthday, let’s also remember the greater deliverance that changed our eternity.
