Only Jesus Fills the Empty Space
Jesus satisfies what nothing else can. Only Jesus fills the empty space.
“Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.’” John 6:35 (ESV)
Everyone experiences empty spaces.
Sometimes disappointment, grief, loneliness, fear, uncertainty, unmet expectations, or even success creates them.
And we often try to fill those places with relationships, achievements, possessions, entertainment, or busyness.
Things life offers us but never really satisfies us deep in our soul.
But all these things still leave us wanting more.
Because every substitute eventually runs dry.
Our Deepest Need is Jesus Himself
Our deepest need isn’t more of what the world offers. But our deepest need is Jesus Himself.
“For he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.” Psalm 107:9 (NIV)
Jesus Gives Living Water That Never Runs Dry: Jesus Fills Us
The world offers temporary satisfaction. But Jesus offers eternal satisfaction.
When we continually come to Him, His life begins overflowing into ours.
“Jesus said to her, ‘Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’” John 4:13–14 (ESV)
Jesus Makes Our Cup Overflow
Jesus doesn’t merely fill us halfway. Because Jesus fills us to overflowing. People wonder if we see the cup (or glass) as half-full or half-empty in life or in a particular situation. Yet, when it comes to Jesus, our cup is always overflowing with His good things. Always.
“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows” Psalm 23:5 (ESV)
Jesus fills us out of His spiritual abundance.
“So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” Ephesians 3:17-19 (ESV)
Christ dwelling in our hearts is what fills the empty space, resulting in the fullness of God.
He replaces fear with peace, weakness with strength, and emptiness with His fullness.

Jesus Is Better Than Every Substitute
We naturally look to people, possessions, accomplishments, or comfort to fill us. Even if God gifts us with these things, we don’t replace Jesus with them.
Only Jesus is enough.
‘You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” Psalm 16:11 (ESV)
“See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.” Colossians 2:8–10 (ESV)
When Jesus Fills Us, We Overflow Into Others
Jesus doesn’t fill us simply for ourselves. He fills us so His love, joy, hope, peace, and grace overflow into our families, churches, and communities.
Overflow is evidence of His work within us.
“Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” John 7:38 (ESV)

Every heart has an empty space. Nothing in this world fills it.
Not success.
Or relationships.
Not money.
Or comfort.
And not achievement.
That space? Created for Jesus.
So when we continually come to Jesus, He doesn’t simply meet our needs—He fills us with Himself. And when Jesus fills the empty space, our lives begin to overflow with His peace, joy, hope, and love.
