Fear Not: Most Repeated Bible Phrase

I’m so excited to introduce a guest blogger, Beckie Lindsey.

Beckie and I met online in a Christian writers Facebook group. Then I had the privilege to meet Beckie in person at a writers conference a few years ago.

I’ve read both released books in her series, Beauties from Ashes. So, I must tell you that she’s a gifted author with a heart for Jesus and His people.

I know this post will encourage you as it continues our theme on fear.

Welcome, Beckie.

Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.  Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.

Joshua 1:7-9 NIV

Fear Not: When the Future is Uncertain

Our family of five gathered for prayer around Kevin, the oldest sibling. After 21 years, it was our last night together under one roof. Kevin was leaving the next morning for basic training in the United States Air Force.

This was a big deal for our close-knit clan. Although we knew where he would be for the next 8 weeks of training, there was much trepidation and uncertainty about the future.

My husband started the prayer. Next came his brother and sister. When it was my turn, the knot in my throat and tears that threatened to spill from my eyes prevented even a whisper. It didn’t help that I could hear the labored breathing and sniffling of the rest of the family.

My mind was like a blank canvas. Nothing. I had nothing.

Soon, my broken heart caught up to my brain as an onslaught of unanswered questions set in like a storm. Would Kevin be okay? Where would they send him after training? Is he ready for this?

Fear Not: Trust in the Lord

I cried out to Jesus inside my head. Like an instantaneous heavenly download, peace silenced my stormy thoughts replacing them with Scriptures about courage and trusting in the Lord.

One of the hardest things to do as parents is to release our grown children to the world.

But who better to understand this than our Heavenly Father? After all, He released His only Son, Jesus to this world knowing the outcome would bring victory over fear and death.

And He knows our (and our children’s) future and outcome, too.

Fear Not: Submit it to God

Did you know “Fear not” is the most repeated phrase in the Bible? God wants us to learn to take our fears to Him.

This is where a great exchange takes place. When we submit our fear, God has room to provide us the courage only He can give.

If we have Jesus, we are never alone. As long as we hold on to the promises in His word, we will have all the wisdom, courage, and comfort we need for every one of life’s situations.

Fear Not: Be Strong and Courageous

In demonstrating the pattern of repetition of Scripture, I’d say the following verse bears repeating. But let’s try something different. Insert your name in the blank (or a family member’s, or friend’s) before each sentence and read it aloud:

“_________ Be strong and courageous. _______ Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with _________ wherever you go.”

Have you been held in fear’s grip over something?

God wants to exchange that fear for His courage. All you must do is ask.

I love the truth that perfect love casts out fear. If we choose to live in the love of Jesus, He will cast out our fear if we let go of it! Thanks for this beautiful reminder. Enjoyed being your neighbor on #DestinationInspiration today. 🙂

Leah says:

Love the idea of adding our OWN names or other people’s names into the blank. Certainly makes the verse feel even more powerful than it already was. Amen!

Fear… oh how it paralyzes me at times. I am thankful to know I can go to Him and receive His comfort and peace. 🙂

Karen, thank you for inviting Beckie to guest blog for you today. I follow her, too, and like you, have absolutely loved her books! Perfect love, God’s perfect love, casts out every fear. Such great inspiration here today!
Blessings!

My husband reminds me of this scripture truth often, the most frequently repeated phrase is “fear not”. I just love that! But I do not reminders, which certainly God knew or it would not be repeated so often! Thank you for anchoring me again in His truth today. Our God is bigger!

During my life, I have allowed fear to take over and given into it. I appreciate your thoughts as trusting God when we feel fear can change our lives. Now, if I feel it trying to get a foothold, then I reflect on these verses and they help me. Thank you.

Chip says:

Great encouragement, Beckie. I’ve heard it said “fear not” and its relatives is said 365 times in the Bible, one for every day.
I can only imagine what it must have been like to pray for your son that day. What a profound moment as a mother. But what a great moment to start his next adventure. Fear is usually the catalyst for faith. Good word!

Oh dear… I have a 16-year old son, and I can only imagine the mama’s heart when her sent is sent off to be in the military. That is normal to feel fear! But yes, as you stated so well, we are to take our fears to God and trust in Him. That helps in those times when fear creeps in – we must remember that God is good and He is worthy of our trust.

Becky, thank you for this reminder. I so agree with this: “One of the hardest things to do as parents is to release our grown children to the world.” It really is! Inserting our own name into that passage is a great recipe for renewed faith and strength in life’s challenges. Like Joshua, we can be strong and courageous, no matter what. The Lord is with us, no matter where we go. God bless you, sister!

I love that you point out that “fear not” is the most repeated phrase in the Bible. It makes me feel better, knowing that God understands our penchant for falling into fear and has already provided for it. Thank you for this post.

Our love is so imperfect. So thankful for His love for us and for your encouragement. Thanks and God bless!

Alynda Long says:

Absolutely love this post! So thankful for His words to encourage us in our struggles and fears.

Emily, Leah, Melissa, and Martha,

Melissa, Yvonne, and Chip,
I’m so pleased this post and Scriptures were an encouragement. It was a tough day, releasing my son from under our roof. But the Lord assured me, HE could take care of him!

Lisa, Melinda, Stephanie, Nancy, and Alynda,
Thanks so much for taking time to comment. The Lord uses these posts to strengthen my own faith. It is an added blessing to know He has also used the writing to encourage yours!
Blessings to each of you,
Beckie

Beautiful post! Thank you for sharing your heart and for this biblical encouragement.

Shelley says:

What a great reminder! I have a 21 year old step son and is father and mother raised him (separately as they were divorced). I only came into the picture as his “bonus mom” after he was an adult. I don’t think that when he leaves to be on his own (he is in his last year of university now) it will have as much impact on me since I haven’t been in his life as long (his father and I were friends for a number of years before we got married 2 1/2 years ago, so he has known me in that capacity). I know it will be hard on his father, and I could be wrong about me not finding it difficult because I’m a complete mush-bag in general. Time will tell.

Thank you so much for sharing your story and for the encouragement to “fear not”.

I remember when my now son-in-law deployed to Afghanistan. It was the first time that the fear was so great all I could do was let it go and trust the Lord with my son-in-law’s life. I made up a Scripture prayer card for both he and I, the same one; he would carry it with him at all times and I would pray over him fervently while he was gone. I can tell you without exaggeration that the Lord spared his life three times! All, in incredibly miraculous ways!

But what was most amazing to me, was that the Lord took my fear away and replaced it with peace, even when I knew my son-in-law was in the front lines and even when little did I know, at the time, what the Lord was protecting him from, but I trusted the Lord to care for him and He did!

Thank you, Karen, for hosting Beckie’s post. I tend to buck up when facing big challenges, but retreat some when the little things come up: having to say something I know the other person won’t like, apologizing and asking for forgiveness, watching my kids engage in very physical sports events, etc. God’s words to Joshua are very encouraging. Thanks again, Karen and Beckie.
