Noticing God in the Moments You Already Have

Please welcome my writing friend, Cathy Baker. Cathy and I met at Blue Ridge Christian Writers Conference over 10 years ago. She’s a sweet reflection of Christ and brings a unique voice to the writing world. Cathy encourages us in noticing God.
As a child, I often noticed my grandparents pulling out their Bibles to read and pray in the morning. When I became a Christ-follower at twenty-seven years old, I naturally followed their pattern, setting aside time to pray and read Scripture before the day began, and I still do this today.
Through the years, the Lord began opening my eyes to see more opportunities for prayer as I went about my day—like praying for a single mom struggling to quiet her child in the grocery line, for the homeless holding signs as I passed by, or for the people in need when I heard sirens.

One particular night, however, reshaped my understanding of prayer in a deeper way. During a church small group, the mom hosting us shared that her son was struggling with depression and was heading down a dangerous path. Prompted by the Holy Spirit, I suggested we go to his room and pray for specific concerns. More than a dozen people took turns praying for his salvation, for freedom from unhealthy habits, for wisdom in choosing healthy friendships, and so much more.
Today, he loves Jesus and is a successful chiropractor with a beautiful family. I believe God graciously responded to those prayers, just as He promises in Mark 11:24:
“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”

Enjoying God’s Presence
Since then, I continue to start my day enjoying the presence of the Lord, but I’ve also become more intentional about pausing to notice the opportunities for prayer peppered throughout my day, especially at home.
As I began to notice these moments more, I also became more aware of how deeply our homes matter. We want our homes to be sanctuaries of grace and peace for everyone who enters. It’s no surprise, then, that families are often targeted by the enemy. He desires to bring division—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
But God desires thriving relationships, peace, joy, hospitality, and above all, a growing love for Him to reign in our homes. Prayer is one of the ways He invites us into all He has for us and those we love.

And when our general prayers become more specific, we discover greater opportunities to notice and rejoice in where He is at work in hearts and in homes. I share an example of this in my book, Making Room for God: A Creative Guide for Praying Through Your Home. One evening, as I walked and prayed through our home, I stood in the kitchen and remembered how much friends’ dinners had helped after a recent surgery.

I wanted to do the same for others but often shied away because I felt my cooking wasn’t good enough. I prayed, asking God to help me release the need for perfection so I could serve Him freely. And He did by giving me the idea to pair a homemade dessert or side with a grocery store rotisserie chicken, and now it’s my go-to. This is God at work in everyday life, and it’s just one of the countless ways He wants to show up, transform lives, and bless our homes and others.
I believe when we pray through our homes—and everywhere in between—we are living out Ephesians 5:15–16:
“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity…”
He is already at work in your home. You’re simply invited to join Him through prayer.
Prayer: Noticing God
Lord, thank You that Your desires for us and for our families are good and full of hope and joy. They are not wishful, pie-in-the-sky hopes—they were planned before time began. Awaken us to Your sweet presence in our homes and help us make the most of every opportunity through prayer, for our good and for Your glory. Amen.
